Hi guys,

Im not sure where to put this really, so thought Id throw it in here. In January Im going to be giving birth to our little girl up here in Canada. My fiance lives in the US. Instead of me moving down there, in the spring he will be moving up here since my exhusband wont allow my children to move to the U.S. We will be starting the paperwork process in late October or November.

My question is, after I give birth to our daughter I want to be able to bring her to the US to visit my fiance's family at some point shortly after. I went to the Toronto consulate website and it states:

U.S. and Canadian children under the age of 16 will be able to present a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship.

It takes about 4 months to get the birth certificate up here in Canada. So Im wondering if anyone here knows what the other proof of citizenship is? Im wondering if a copy of the statement of live birth is enough? Im hoping that I can fly down with her a couple of weeks after I give birth for approximately 4-6 weeks. Has anyone gone through this, or know what other proof of citizenship you can bring other than a birth certificate or passport for her since she wont have one yet?

You also need to check flight policies.

Airplane companies will only let newborn children of a certain age on... and I think you have to wait more than a few weeks.

I think it varies per company.

And well, as an example I'm looking at Air Canada.

It looks like they may require a Birth Certificate... so I'd do research depending on which airline you want to fly with.

Yah, Ive been in contact with the consulate regarding filing the report of birth abroad. She told me that once the Canadian birth certificate comes in, and my fiance is visiting up here we can go to the consulate and make an appointment and at that point we can file for it and also a US passport too. But that wouldnt be done till shes about 5 months old or so

I just got this off the travel.state.gov website

All children regardless of age, including newborns and infants, must have their own passport to travel to the U.S.

So it looks like your newborn will actually need to have a passport to travel, not simply a birth certificate. See also:

A birth record, baptismal record, a Certificate of Citizenship, or Certificate of Naturalization AND a photo ID are NO LONGER VALID forms of ID as of June 1, 2009. This is the same rule that applies to flying. The rule also applies if crossing the border and traveling by cruise ship or small boat.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info! This bites! I was hoping that she would be able to see the other side of her family before she is out of that 'newborn' stage

Also remember to bring strong proof of ties to Canada when you travel to the U.S. - mortgage or lease document, bank statement, letter from employer, letter from the person looking after your other children while you are in the U.S. - noting the date you plan to return etc.

I would call the border and ask them.

Hello,

I gave birth in Canada to my son last year ( his father is US citizen). I received the birthcertificate when he was 11 days old. I registered the birth and applied for the birth certificate and SIN card online and it was extreamly fast. I also got him his canadian passport when he was only a few weeks old. He was visiting his family in the US when he was only a couple of months old. So if you apply online you can get the bc much faster and then the passport only takes a couple of weeks afte that. Good luck.

Wow, 11 days. Thats awesome. I called the registrars office and they told me as well that if you submit it with all the information u can get it as fast as a week. So Im keeping my fingers crossed!

And I currently dont have a lease or mortgage :( I live with my parents until Dave moves up here and once he finds a job we will move out on my own.

So Ill only be brining a letter from my employer stating Im on a 3 month maternity leave and the date Im due back, my bank statements, my return ticket, and of course Daves letter saying I have permission to fly to the US with her... and thats it really...
