What's the deal with the few minute timeout?

Most other forums have at least 30 or 60 minute timeou; some indefinite.

It would also save on a lot of moderation as you can edit a post once you accept it was not appropriate.

It was originally limited to five minutes to prevent he said she said type things when a person said something, another person replied, and then the first person changes their message. The five minutes is in line with digg.com and several other social media sites however if everyone thinks there is a benefit to making it longer I would consider it.
