Told my bosses about interview date approaching...slight venting going on

Hi everyone. So today I informed my bosses that my interview date is 11 days away. One took it very well and was telling me how great that is that I'm finally almost finished with this part of it.

The other boss is FREAKING OUT. He's already telling me: OK...so what is the story, what does this mean, what is going on.....WHOA THERE BUDDY.

I have already been explaining this for a year since before I evens started the K-1. I don't see why I have to go through it all A MILLION TIMES. He NEVER seems to remember anything I say and panics all the time.

I just said to him: Listen, until i actually go to the interview and get approved, I can't really make plans. He's already talking about putting an ad in the paper to find someone to replace me. According to the other boss, no one will be replacing me. It's all a big freaking circus here at my office now and it seems like no one is happy for me except one boss and my best friend who is the manager at my company.

I am even giving them 5 weeks notice. I think that is fair. If all goes well on Sept. 28th I think leaving Oct. 30 as my last day is plenty of time for them to hire someone new. But I certainly don't think its very professional of them to start looking now. I haven't even gone to the interview yet.

sounds like that one isn't much of a manager.

The sort of same thing happened to me. I explained what was going on when we got our I130 approved and gave them a very soft information deadline. What'd they do? Laid me off based on that extremely soft date (I said between this amount of time).

Now there is a weird vibe in the office. The "good" boss is all smiles with me and acting normal. The "paranoid" boss won't even really look at me now and is sitting in my best friends office whispering to her trying to get more info out of her.

HELLO! My best friend does not have any more info on the situation. I've told her the same thing as everyone else. How rude!

Oddly enough, my boss doesn't really care.

My uh, I guess supervisor I guess you could call her is pretty excited for me.

She's already looking into trying to hire someone else, because I have one of those jobs that you have to see if you can deal with it and so forth.

It's a pretty boring job... and I'm the only one that's lasted in the past 2 years. Haha.

Not to mention like no one applies for it. Oh well.

Since my contract is ending in January and I'm friends with my boss outside work I told her about my situation.

But I think if I was in any other situation, I wouldn't tell them. Just ask for time off for the interview, but not tell them for what, just "An appointment".

Maybe your cool boss, should talk to the paranoid boss.

Oh and whole whispering this is NOT professional.

My company was fairly understanding, everyone knew I was marrying and moving. My boss was a friend and our entire team knew it as coming.

On the flip side - if you're going to give them 5 weeks, don't you think they should start advertising your position? They need to interview, hire, get the person in to train. Those 5 weeks will evaparate like you wouldn't believe for you too!

I can understand that you don't want your job pulled out from under you until all the ducks are in a row, I didn't either. but your company may feel that although you've said 5 weeks, what if you give them 2 weeks/ You could :)

You'll lose interest in the remaining 5 weeks, trust me. I tried to stay focussed, but I was so giddy with my own plans. I tried to leave my team in good shape with instructions galore - but in the end I couldn't get everything done. Probably worked harder in those weeks then I had in the past year. And then, I was done.

OH my... this sort of freaks me out! Don't judge me people, but I told my boss that my husband is immigrating to Canada!!! I'm SORRY! But in this economy and the three rounds of layoffs we went through PLUS, I'm a graphic designer in the marketing department, chances were really high that I would get the chop, way more so if they knew that my leaving was imminent, you know?

So, while I stress and wait for an interview, I'm stressed as to how I will manage to get interview time off (used all my days visiting hubby) AND once it's all said and done, how I will tell my boss, how long will I give and if it will be a HUGE deal and if everyone'll be pissed at me. I also want to ensure that I can collect EI while in the US...

It's gonna suck. Plus, I fear too that they may suspect something and can my butt before it's time.

Chin up everyone, we'll get through this -- it's work and well, our lives outside of work are more important.

:)

The reality is: they are NOT hiring someone else to replace me. Business has been really slow here at my company and the "good' boss has already stated they will not replace me and just move ahead with the people we have now until business gets better.

Therefore "paranoid" boss needs to stop freaking out and whispering in peoples offices. I haven't had the interview yet and god forbid something should go wrong and I have to stay in Canada more time than I thought.

He really needs to chill. He's acting like I murdered his pet or something.

I wouldn't get too stressed out about his reaction. People get so dramatic about things in an office because they have nothing better to talk about.

IF they are going to hire someone, they should definitely do it fast. My job knew I was leaving months and months in advance. I officially gave 6 weeks notice. And, even then, in my last day I was training the person taking over my work. It took my managers the whole 6 weeks to figure out what to do with my work.

At this point Dome, it's not your problem, so I wouldn't worry about it. You gave your notice and they will figure out what to do.

Well - if that's the case, then 'paranoid boss' should just shut-up and learning to deal with his feelings of abandonment :) Really - that is the issue. some people just don't deal with change well. And they don't know how to be happy for someone else. those people suck

Yeah, it does sound like someone who just doesn't deal well with change - this is all about him, not you (to him)

Sometimes people at work get in kind of a bubble and forget it is work and a business (of course you can have really close friendships at work - business aside). Kind of like people who leave a job and everyone says ohhhh you can't leave, no one can do your job, you are so valuable to this company.

Guaranteed you return 6 months later, someone is sitting in your chair doing the job
