Jimmy Carter: Wilson comments 'based on racism'

I haven't heard anyone say in person that they don't like Obama because he's black. The idea Obama's policies are generally judged differently because of the color of his skin is ridiculous.

The trend now is to now label opponents of Obama as racist because they desperate need something, anything to save the Democrats. I expect we'll have more of these racist charges as Obama's poll numbers and the economy continues to tank.

Then you haven't been talking to the right (wrong) people. That is why my own Father does not support the President. That is why his friends don't support the President.

The day after the election, I sat outside at a local Hardee's and overheard three people agreeing that "the government had to let one of them be elected eventually".

Insofar as whether Wilson made the comment out of racism - hard to say. I've felt all along he may have intentionally shouted to try and steer more opposition towards the immigrant aspect of healthcare since death panels and other nonsense were dying out.

As to whether or not he owes anyone else an apology besides the President, I say the typical rules of social courtesy should apply. Say you went to a party and there was an open discussion between several guests including the host. Say there was a moment of disagreement between two guests (not all) and one guest called the other a liar in front of everyone else. Say the entire group was stunned and shocked. Who does the offending guest owe an apology to? The person he offended? The host? The other guests?

Let's put Carter's comments in context here. Carter did NOT directly called Wilson a racist.

The founder of the Tea Bag Party calls Obama, "the Racist in Chief" and when questioned about it, he defended it on Anderson360.

Glen Beck has also called the President a racist.

So lets really look at just who is pulling the racist card here.

"I think it's based on racism," Carter said in response to an audience question at a town hall held at his presidential center in Atlanta. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."

For him to say he thought something that was said by Wilson is based on racism, IMHO is the same as saying that his comment had a foundation rooted in racism. Its simple english.

And also, IMHO to say "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president." following the statement only backs up the meaning in the first place.

And BTW this same comment could be made by other groups also...I am sure that there is a inherent feeling among MANY Latinos that a Caucasian should not be president...as well as I am sure that there is a inherent feeling among MANY African-Americans that a Caucasian should not be president.

And I should say before I get yelled at I don't believe Glenn Beck or the "TeaBag" leader should be making those comment either.

That's making quite a leap. My understanding of what Carter meant is that the disrespectful outburst was fueled by racism. Just like the anti-immigration movement is also partly fueled by racism. That doesn't mean everyone who wants to put a stop to illegal immigration is a racist, neither does it mean Wilson himself is a racist.

But getting back to Glen Beck and Mike Williams' calling the President a racist - they have done so repeatedly, on the air. Whether you condone it or not, the point is that if we're going to make generalizations about people pulling the race card - let's look at just who's playin.

Many liberals are inherently racist, and many suffer from White Guilt. They voted for Barry because he is Black and they defend him no matter what because he is Black. His being Black and "historic" means more to them than his being right or wrong on any issue.

...and there you have it folks.

Two priceless posts from extreme Right Wing lunatics. Give 'em enough rope and they'll hang themselves with it.

I've actually been sitting here waiting for the White Guilt post.

Let it never be said that the Right Wing Lunatic Fringe isn't well represented here on VJ.

Hey Sofi - did you read about that liberal Judge who tossed out Orly Taitz lawsuit? I'm dying to know what you think about the judge's ruling.

I'm not surprised. Judges are about as usedful as journalists these days.

Funny. I thought most people in the thread were saying they disagreed with Carter.
