Two issues, I don't like direct light sources for everything (tv screens, monitors etc) and the control of the book by the seller.

I do like books aesthetically, and I hope libraries continue to stock hard copies, although I can see an incentive for innovation in libraries.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

At work some of the other publishers have been giving away free Sony E-Book readers (basically the same as the Kindle) - so that editors can review books without having to see a big manuscript (and the costs of printing and mailing 500+ pages of double-spaced A4).

Exactly, I can see a library revolution taking place if the right set of circumstances present themselves and it would be a money saving exercise in the long run, at least I think it would. Libraries may cease to be brick and mortar entities within the community which has its down sides too.

Libraries (not to mention bookstores) are already finding it difficult to compete with amazon, which offers most books for 40% off the RRP. Borders and B&N usually only do that for new titles (and you still have to pay tax).

Amazon controls the first and second market in that respect - they'll sell the book to you at a big discount and then provide you with the means to resell it on the site when you're done.

I for one don't like the fact that Amazon can access the content via IP and delete any material it sees fit to delete.

Wow....are you sure? I would think that would be illegal, even if they included it in the terms of service?

MC - the screen doesn't use light to emit the picture. I can't remember the name of the technology but it has the same contrast and look as a newspaper.

Devices like these are not going make books or libraries go extinct. However, libraries are already modernizing in offering digital text versions of books via the internet. I think that digital age will be a great boos to public libraries because people will have access to books that they wouldn't normally have access to. Just think of all the books that are out of print.

The libraries of tomorrow will be much more efficient as they continually change with the technology.

That is interesting, I did not know that. Hmmmm.

I wasn't suggesting that libraries would go extinct, but I think the 'in every neighbourhood' brick and mortar part might. I am thinking there will be hub libraries that have book collections but that the average user will simply download the books they wish to borrow.

I am not a technophobe but I do still like the aesthetics of books ;)

Me too. I recently bought myself a digital tablet for painting and illustrating digitally. I was really apprehensive about making artwork that wasn't physically real. There's no replacing real paintings, but I'm finding that working digitally really opens up more possibilities for me as an artist.

I'm still looking forward to that touch surface - that Microsoft previewed a year or so ago. That was really neat!

NPR had a story on this a month or two ago... they literally went in on several users and erased material that they deemed to be in violation of copyright arbitrarily.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
