I've read several things on VJ concerning this apparent form letter that often gets sent out from NVC concerning K-1 visa petitions and now I'm wondering what typically happens after this letter. As for myself, I received this letter (that states "...within a week the petition will be forwarded to the appropriate visa-issuing post...") dated the 8th of September and as of today, one week later, it still hasn't left NVC. I was also told today that our petition is undergoing "additional processing." I read one post that says your petition will be received at the embassy (in this particular post they were talking about Kiev/Kyiv) within 2-3 weeks after this "forwarding" letter. I'm hoping this is accurate. Actually I was hoping for a shorter stay at NVC but I guess I shouldn't complain about that if it does indeed happen as I have read that often it is much worse than 2-3 weeks.

In case anyone else is curious about what is really happening after this letter from NVC, I thought maybe those of us that have received it could list the date the letter was received and then the dates of any significant occurences after receiving the letter--hopfeully the day it leaves NVC and or the day it arrives at the embassy. This can either help to ease our minds or to give us more reason to worry, but either way it would be nice to know what is really happening.

Forwarding letter dated: Sept 08, 2009

Date petition left NVC/number of days after letter: */* days

P.S. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to participate.

Additional processing at the NVC level typically takes 10 days to 8 weeks. The petition is then forwarded to Kiev and it typically takes about 3 weeks from when they forward it to Kiev to be entered in Kiev's system. At that point you can make an interview. If it is any consolation to you, Kiev is running less than a week on interview lead times, in many consulates you wait months for an interview. Get all your interview documents ready

Gosh I hope it is much closer to 10 days than the 8 weeks, after waiting almost 6 months at VSC I'm about to lose it. Argh--then another 3 weeks just to get entered into the system??? Well if it ever gets there it is nice to know that maybe the interview can take place fairly soon afterwards. I had heard that they aren't too busy there now. We pretty much have everything done already and Lena will go for the medical exam next week probably. I am a little worried that maybe some things we have completed too early, such as the statement from the police stating that she and her daughter have been involved in no crime. If that is dated a month or more before the interview I hope it will pose no problem. I guess if they say anything about that I can produce the "forwarded in a week" letter and state that we thought they would actually do what they said they would do... This process is maddening!

Let me ask you, how can I know when the petition is entered into the system in Kiev? I am worried that communication from there may not happen and or may happen very belatededly. I also hate to call there often as I don't want to irritate anyone there and maybe get our case delayed due to that.

We had similar situation.. Our case was sent to NVC but we were stuck for next 2 months. We also got 2 letters from nVC about sending our case during next week, but we were in AP. What you can do it's just keep calling them and wait. We called every week. It was hard time.. but now we are together ;) After NVC cases use to get to Kiev's Embassy in 2-3 working days. Then time will go so fast.. start getting ready your documents for interview.

Thanks for the information and for the encouragement. We are pretty much ready as far as documents are concerned. I am only afraid that we are ready too soon and that they will consider some of the documents as having been prepared prematurely.

Did you mean to say from NVC to Kiev in 2-3 days? Or maybe you meant weeks? If days, you mean we should be able to schedule our interview in Kiev 2-3 days after our petition leaves NVC? Если да - УРА!!!

The police certificate is good for 1 year, so no worries there. Once you have found out the petition has been forwarded to Kiev you can write the consulate kyiviv@state.gov or call the cqll center, give them your KEV number and see if they have it in the system. I used to know a little trick that let you do this without incurring charges on your call center OIN but I know have reports they have wised up and it doesn't work. :( At one time the consulate was updating the call center on cases on Friday's, I cannot confirm that is still the case, but I think yes. That means if you call on Monday and they do not have your case there is no point in calling before the next Monday, nothing will change.

Delivery to the consulate from NVC is 2-3 days...NOT weeks. But that means nothing. You cannot make an appointment until Kiev enters the petition into the system at the consulate and that can take 2-3 weeks. Kiev processes hundreds of visas, the day of our interview there was more than 400 people there, not all K-1s, of course, but each visa and appointment has to be entered into the system. I understand the volume is down quite a bit, but when we went for the K-2 to follow in June, there was still a lot of people there and just as many K-1s as before. Of course, Kiev is no longer doinginterviews on Friday so they have compressed things a bit. It was definitely NOT a ghost town in late June.

There is a thread pinned at the top of this forum, called "Pinned: STUCK @ NVC for AP"

Quite a lot of info there. We were there for some time last year when they started putting K1's into AP.

Times have come down since then..wishing you a speedy trip through!

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

What??

The sending of the petition from the visa center to the embassy takes about 2-3 business days. But you can schedule your interview only after the embassy examines the documents and sends them to the call center. You can only schedule your interview with the call center. For us this took two weeks. So even if your case in is the system at the embassy in Kiev, you still can't schedule your interview since the embassy doesn't schedule interviews, they only review your documents, and if everything is okay they send your case to the call center and after that you can schedule your interview. The embassy forwards cases every every Friday evening.

Ah, I understand. Thank you very much! So this means that, after NVC, it is useful to call the call center only once a week, probably on Monday or Tuesday to find out if your case has been sent to the call center, right? I wasn't sure about this, that is, how to find out when your documents arrive at the call center. Again thank you very much!

I can write a little in Russian...oh and I know a few words in Ukrainian too--thank you very much! :)

Whew! Bob and Liezl, I think all this applies mainly only to the embassy in Kiev, not sure if applicable anywhere else. Good luck!
