On the SSN form instructions, you can apply for a SSN anytime after you land.

After reading some problems VJ members have encountered, however, it seems the best time to apply for an SSN is after you are married AND holding an approved EAD.

A standalone EAD costs US$ 340 to file...but if you apply for it concurrently (or at the same time) with your Adjustment of Status and/or Advance Parole (AP, which applies to K1/K2 applicants only), the fee is waived.

One poster here filed for an SSN before she was married (K1)...and encountered some problems when she tried to have her name and marital status updated after she was married.

When you visit the SS website, it says that even though you can get a SSN, it can't be used for employment, unless you already have an approved EAD in hand.

I didn't encounter any problem changing my SSN info with my married name. The process was so fast and I got my new card a couple of days after I applied to change my name.

You have the choice. She can either apply before you're married or after. Good thing with applying after marriage is that, you no longer have to go back to the SSA office to change name. However, some local office does not accept marriage certificate as proof (others do). Here in AZ, I had to wait for my EAD before I could change my maiden name to married name.

After Claudeth had been here for 2 weeks I took her to the Social Security office and to apply for her card. She received it in the mail a couple of weeks later. When we changed her name on the card we had to wait for her conditional green card to come and that still took about 6 weeks to get the new card.

After she has been here at least ten days go to the nearest Social Security office or Card Center. Take the I-94, passport and if it's handy, her birth certificate. Then once she has been assigned an SSN, you are married and her K-1 status isn't within 14 days of expiring (I suggest if possible giving yourself 30 days or more), she can go back to apply for the name change. Will need marriage certificate, passport and I-94. Once she enters the 14 day period, an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card will be needed.
