Hi All,

My interview was scheduled at Mumbai Consulate @ 7.30am today. Was there at 6.45am. they start taking you in only at 7am and doesnt make a difference how early you've come there as you are called for the interview only on random basis. no particular order.

Finished fingerprints by 7.45am and was called for the 1st interview at 8am. it was an Indian guy who handed me back the original documents. Then asked for my Passport and then the following questions:

1. Passport still holds maiden name.

2. Are you still working? and as what?

3. Is husband a gree card holder or a citizen?

4. When did he get his citizenship?

5. Have you been to the US before?

6. When was husband last here in India? and for how many days?

7. When you work here how has husband included your income in the tax filing there?

He then asked me to wait outside till called for the Interview.

So my 1st Interview was done by 8.05am but then had to wait till 12.45pm for name to be called for the 2nd interview.

Was an American lady. very polite and had a smile throughout.

Asked me whether i am comfortable with English. I said yes. She then said i need to take an Oath and then asked me to sign the for (Part II of DS 230). Then asked me the following questions:

1. When did you get married?

2. Was it a love or arranged marriage?

3. How did you meet your husband?

4. Have you travelled with your husband to the US?

5. Did you always want to marry a US citizen?

6. How is husband including your income in tax filings there? --> i said we have filed taxes post consulting a tax consultant and pas a part of this process i have also got an ITIN number.

She then smiled and said 'Your Visa has been issued and will be sent to you thru courier'. I then asked her whether i could collect it today evening from the VFS. she said there was a backlog and no chances of getting it the same day and suggested to wait till i get it through Courier.

But i didnt want to wait another 2-3 days to get it. So reached the VFS at 3.45pm. they handover passports to IV applicants on the same day betn 4.30 to 5pm. At 4.45 they took us in and got the packet in hand. was advised by teh VFS oifficer not to open the sealed yellow packet and that shud be submitted at the POE. Came out checked my Passport and was so happy to see the Visa stamped on it :)

Overall it was a nice experience except for the long wait. Consider myself lucky that the 2nd interview was completed within 5 mins and was not asked for any evidences like documents / photographs.

Thanx to all in Visa Journey for the valuable inputs provided.

Yes we filed joint return for 2008 tax. According to IRS rules (summarized at http://www.aca.ch/brunaltx.htm) the non-resident alien spouse can be considered as resident for federal tax purposes. This means we can get the joint return deductions while omitting much of their foreign income and save more on taxes in the end. We did this based on discussion with IRS agent and tax preparer so i'm not sure why the consulate had concerns about this. The ITIN is a proxy to SSN for tax return purposes. It is obtained by the W7 form.
