teachers in Britain's schools believe they should warn pupils about the dangers of patriotism

I have a friend that is a probation officer. At world cup time, the staff at her office aren't allowed to display the England flag anywhere in the office or even in their cars for fear of upsetting minorities! They aren't allowed to be patriotic!

It's political correctness gone crazy.

I get the impression.. this is what the majority over there want.

It seems so often we get one report after the other... indicating a country which is greasing the skids to it's final chapter.

... and they can't even see it, just look at the parsing of words here.

:wow:

Let me get this straight:

The fact that school teachers dont feel its appropriate to teach patriotic sentiment in a classroom setting via an extremely vaguely defined modification of school curriculums that the central government wants to impose on them = a country about to collapse?

Presumably all the schools should could go back to using those politically incorrect textbooks of the 19th and early 20th centuries (the ones where Britain appears 3 or 4 times its actual size on the map) from the days of Empire

I don't think you could get any more melodramatic if you tried

Pike come on. US is one extreme, 2009 UK is the other. While I have joked with you before, there are many Brits who need to be proud of the UK. Displacing native populations is an honor. #### em. Survival of the fittest after all.

You cannot have a country where people just don't give a ####### about it. Unity is what bonds a country. It's what prevents civil wars. It's what keeps people working towards a common goal and purpose. It's why a place like Australia is doing so damn good. Australians love for their country is why left and right wing parties are not tearing each other apart but putting their differences aside and working towards improving the country; yes even more.

But

As you very well know, I do not equate flag waiving, pin wearing, or even the national anthem at sporting events as being patriotic. Actually that is moronic. Patriotic for me is someone who puts themselves on the line for the greater good of the country and its people; much in the same way Americans did during the revolutionary war; much in the same way Americans did during the first and second world war.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You don't make people patriotic by shoehorning lessons in "Britishness" into school curriculums.

It's a prime example of the government making decree from on high and trying to lumber others with trying to make it work.

It doesn't work. Its a stupid idea all around - and I'll trust the teachers over the politicians any day of the week.
