It's amusing to see people talk about a 40 yr. old organization that they know nothing of except from Right Wing News sources.

Some of the teabagger protesters in Washington D.C. were rambling on about how ACORN is some communist wing of Obama's regime.

Maybe because they were some shitty little organization really until one of their own was elected PRESIDENT and then all the sudden they were put in line for an 8 BILLION Dollar feedbag.

Yah most people didn't know much about the group until mid last year when it was exposed that a founding member had stolen 1 Million Dollars $1,000,000....8 years prior....and the group had kept it a secret from everyone and allowed him to repay it.

And where did you first hear about ACORN? Glen Beck? Fox News? World Nut Daily?

You haven't a clue what the organization is, what they've done historically, or even what they are, but you've openly and willingly bought into the Right Wing lunatic fringe's rants without doing your own research into the group.

I challenge you to look for other sources (besides Right Wing Nut sites) and try and find impartial information on the group. You can simply be satisfied that nuts like Glen Beck are telling you the truth or you can dig deeper. Chances are you won't, but I have hope that if you really are that emotionally involved with the issue, you will look beyond the Right Wing rhetoric.

First of all, I never claimed to know much about ACORN...and like so many here, never heard of them until Right Wing Media outlets started ranting about them during the election.

Whenever somebody or a group of people start ranting about how bad such and such is, I'm naturally skeptical until I know and understand what it is they are ranting about. And given that ACORN is a liberal organization and the bulk of the ranting is coming from Right Wing politicos, I know that it is purely political. There are lots of grass roots organizations out there. I hold no strong opinion for or against ACORN, except that I support what the organization stands for and their objectives. I couldn't tell you one name of their board members. I just won't stand idle when the Right Wing Selective Outrage Brigade decides to make a Left Wing organization their target of ridicule.

Judicial Watch is a Right Wing organization that went after the Clinton's in the 90's. They are the same nuts challenging the legitimacy of Hillary as Secretary of State right now. They have a clear agenda and an axe to grind. I'll have read over the rest of your post later, but like I said - find some impartial reports on ACORN and feel free to post what they say about ACORN. Nevada law prohibits paying canvassers for registering voters, but Christopher Edwards, former field director for ACORN, admitted to being involved in "a scheme to pay canvassers who were told they had to register at least 20 voters a day to keep their jobs and an additional $5 for getting 21 or more." Edwards has agreed to testify against ACORN in return for a lighter sentence. This case raises several issues. In 2008, ACORN was frequently accused of voter fraud, but no one investigated the accusations very thoroughly. Now that ACORN employees are confirming that the allegations were at least partially true, it will be very interesting to see whether the Federal Government steps in and investigates......."

If it was just one instance, then I'd agree with the rogue cop comparison. However, there are now three sets of ACORN reps, in three different offices, caught on camera advising essentially the same thing in each case. Regardless of who was caught on camera, it speaks to the doctrine of the organisation as a whole that three unrelated sets of people from the same organisation advised the same illegal actions.

Whatever good ACORN may have accomplished in the past, all of the misdemeanours sourced back to the organisation in the present speak to an environment that encourages and supports the illegal actions of its members, before promptly throwing them under the bus once they get caught out.

And I agree that ACORN was essentially unknown before the last election. But their actions brought them to prominence and they were unprepared to face the spotlight that fell on them, so leading to their undoing. As the saying goes, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Yah I did notice it, are you asking another apples and oranges comparison.

Its a straw man argument that you are offering again.

If my employees were embezzling money by overcharging my customers credit cards or something, then yes I would help get them prosecuted BUT I would not hide it unlike ACORN.

If I had 5 stores and 4 or my 5 managers was stealing my customers money, I would prosecute and change the way that my business structure was ran to stop it from happening. The chances of it happening at 4 of the 5 stores would be a large improbability, but maybe and only if the managers sensed some attitude or something I did that made them think it was ok.

Remember like I said before the ACORN employees did these things with NO FEAR OF REPRISALS, for some reason they thought it would be OK if their bosses at ACORN found out what kind of advice they were giving out.

I haven't kept up with this debate on VJ so I'm probably jumping in at the wrong time.

I agree there are some nutty ppl who will jump at anything they can to make the left look bad or an organization like acorn look bad. But come on, they just made themselves look EXTREMELY idiotic!!! Had a group like the Boy Scouts done something like giving illegal, idiotic advice to someone secretly on tape, people would be alllllllll over it. I hope you at least feel this shows how they need some serious looking into and some figuring out within their own org if they want to be perceived as something good or trustworthy. I am not going to write off anything good they have done, but I hope ppl aren't getting defensive on behalf of acorn just because they aren't right wing. I feel it's double standards when if a right wing group pulled this kind of #######, they would be harshly talked about as well.

U.S. Senate denies funds for poverty group

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A poverty-rights group that has drawn the ire of conservatives suffered another setback in Washington on Monday when the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to deny it access to federal housing funds.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which helps poor people fight foreclosures and fix tax problems, has received more than $53 million in U.S. funds since 1994, but conservatives' charges of widespread fraud have begun to impact its reputation in the capital.

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau told the group it did not want its help boosting participation in next year's census.

The Senate measure, which passed 83 to 7 in the Democratic-led chamber, was included in a must-pass spending bill that funds housing and transportation programs for the fiscal year that starts October 1.

"This is an opportunity for the United States Senate to stand up and say 'Enough is enough' just as the Census Bureau did," said Republican Senator Mike Johanns, the measure's sponsor.

The bill includes $165 million for housing-counseling programs and $4 billion to help poor communities weather the worst recession since the 1930s.

ACORN said the Senate's action was disappointing but would have little impact on its overall operations.

"The only real victims of today's vote are the families who have benefited from ACORN's important work," ACORN chief Bertha Lewis said in a statement posted on the group's website.

The House of Representatives passed a similar spending bill without restrictions on ACORN. The House and Senate must resolved differences before a final measure can be sent to Obama to sign into law.

Republicans say ACORN engaged in widespread fraud during the 2008 presidential campaign when it launched a massive voter-registration drive in minority communities, which typically support Democrats and ended up voting overwhelmingly for President Barack Obama.

ACORN says less than 2 percent of its 1.3 million voter applications were fraudulent, stemming from canvassers who sought to boost the number of forms they turned in. Independent analysts say any actual impact on the election was negligible.

The group has also suffered an embezzlement scandal involving the founder's brother.

ACORN more recently has been embarrassed by conservative activists who secretly taped employees in several cities giving tax advice to a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute.

The group has fired several of those taped while denouncing the actions as a smear campaign.

And now another. Look for more. It is absolutely sickening. Glad the Senate did the right thing. The news media, other than FOX does not. I cannot believe, THREE released tapes, Census cuts their funds, Senate cuts their funds and NOT A WORD in the iberal media. How can we tolerate such biased reporting? They are as bad as TASS and Pravda.
