My USC has Russian as his first language! Eekk it's hard but luckily the gym that I work at has 1 Russian coach and another on their way and one of the other English coaches speaks Russian so I can try to practise.

After countless books and CDs, what really worked for me was enrolling into a Saturday class (9am - 12:45) at my local college.

In all, I took Japanese 101 and 201. I only wanted to improve my vocabulary, but ended up learning read and write Hiragan, Katakana, and a few Kanji characters (there's over 20,000 Kanji). I also found it helpful to watch Japanese films (absolutely no anime).

Prior to my learning to read Japanese, all the characters were just cute pictures...but in January (we were in Tokyo) I was reading all of the signs in the streets.

I think RingRing was somewhere between "proud of my efforts" and "annoyed that I was reading the signs aloud, like a 7 year old." :-)
