Anybody got any good refferences for build your own website, websites?

Well its time I start gearing up for looking for work now I am a legal resident. :dance: :dance:

But I need to make an online design portfolio, and I am gonna have to do it myself, I am not website design literate really (well if you give me a basic site with the tools I can but anyway, :ot2: )

I once had a site with that "website in a box thingy". which was good but limiting in the overall design unless you understood hmtls and all that jazz which I didn't at the time. I just dropped it because I wasn't going to maintain funds in my UK bank anymore.

What I really want to do is make something artsy but quick loading, that I can get my head around, will give me my own domain and email (at least eventually, when I pay) and wont cost a load to maintain/set up. But all the ones I am finding look like the people I went to before and I just can't choose.

Anybody got any advice? :unsure:

If you have a Mac, it should include iLife (or you can purchase it for cheap) and use iWeb and a MobileMe account to get a quick and great looking site up.

But I think the advice professionals would give you is to hire a pro.

I know GoDaddy has a product called SiteMaker that's platform independent.

Thanks but we can't afford to buy a Mac just yet (its gunna be our next computer B) ) so stuck on pc for a while. :thumbs:

WordPress is fantastic. I have done over 8 websites using WordPress and I'm really impressed with everything from layouts, plug-ins, statistics, and so on. Plus you can choose from thousands of designs and even modify them if you like some CSS and Html codes, but there is a lot of good and free designs for you to choose. Whizzy-Wigs (WYSIWYG programs) are the anti-christ. Any site built with one looks like #######-on-a-stick. Anyone calling themselves a "web designer" when they use such a program should be bludgeoned. That's like a burger-flipper at McD's calling himself a chef.

I learned HTML from that site. I built my first site 3 days after finishing it. A year later, I was working as a web designer for the state of Indiana.

P.S. As for the web hosting, drop me a PM. I have a web server in Denver. Domain names....go to GoDaddy.com. Do NOT buy their web hosting. I tried it. It's horrible. Slow responses, limited options and functionality.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Try blogspot or wordpress. They have preinstalled templates already. Later on, you can customize your template or buy a domain when you know how already. Understanding basic HTML is easy, plus usually you can find mostly all blogging-related questions in google. Goodluck.
