Murphy's Law

Well..I decided I might try and take a trip to see my SO before the K1 goes any further (we're probably another month or 2 off NOA2 time according to current timelines at CSC)

Checked my savings and I have JUST enough to get a flight and have some left over (still waiting on my divorce settlement so cash is a little tight atm).

Then I broke a tooth.

Dentist says it requires a crown..thats £400 I gotta find but ok ok I can deal - just means I have nothing much left after the flight costs..no biggie I'll work something out...

Then this morning the central heating breaks down.

The house is freezing and there's no hot water now.

It's not the boiler, had that checked about 4 months ago at the start of winter, and serviced, but probably the pump - which wont be cheap after labor charges (which will probably work out more than the new pump)..

I can only hope that my settlement comes thru as I'm likely to be asked to contribute to the repair costs..

My SO's name IS Murphy - and stuff like this ALWAYS seems to happen to us

so I wanna just SCREAM about the timing of this and run round yelling saying words like 'UNFAIR'!

Oooh I have a GREAT broken tooth story.

My friend was working for a year in Sacramento witha mission project. On the weekends they would get cheap flights and fly around Cali to see the state. So I think she was in LA maybe? So they were flying home on a sunday....and it was a beautiful day out. The flight was delayed about 3 hours - so they went out and got some wine or something and sat out to have a few drinks.

Well my friend had MORE than a few drinks. So they get a cab back to the airport. When she gets out - she goes to the back door to open it, grasps the handle and is so drunk she slips...falls on the ground and breaks half of her front tooth OFF. She's drunk, laughing, crying and now has blood dripping down her chin from her borken tooth.

She goes to check in for her flight, bloody, reeking of booze and tear stained...and they won't let her on the plane. THey say she is too drunk. They make her go and "sleep it off" for a few hours. She was so embarrassed...there's a pic of her looking sad, smiling with half a tooth and blood all over her shirt and face.

V. scary picture.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

Dentistry is a big sticking point in the UK. There was free health care until a few years ago, then most practices went private and so they are allowed to charge these outrages charges. It is disgusting considering we pay National Health stamps from our wages. So people from abroad get the misconception of free health care ...which sadly is not true.

Dentist's aren't free in the UK unless you are a student/child/unemployed/disabled person.

The NHS charges are better than the private ones, but you can have trouble finding an NHS dentist who will take you on.

For big work like that you can usually get the dentist to give you a payment plan. Another idea might be go get one of those credit cards that have 0% for one year and pay it off in chunks. Depends on what your financial situation is I guess.

Hope your toothy peg feels better soon!

It could be worse. You could be on the other end of your divorce settlement.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Well actually I kind of AM money wise..I settled for less than half of what I'm entitled to (being entitled to half) so I could expediate things and also let my ex keep the house (he's buying me out but for less than half the value) so my kid can have a place of familiarity to come visit when she goes back to UK for holidays, plus I don't want half his pension (seemd unfair to me and Im remarrying anyways)

And yeah crowns that dont look like you are a wanna-be rapper cant get on the NHS. Anyways Im not on benefits..but even the national health Price for crowns is expensive - and my dentist isn't a rip off artist either - he's a good guy.

Still

ARGH!

Wow. I must be psychic. There is a 'whole' lot of difference from getting almost half to giving almost half.

Best of luck with the dentist. I'm waiting until I go back to Thailand where you can get 1st world care at a 3rd world price.
