:help: Hi,

My husband just received his NOA1 for his AOS & EAD aplications ( he arrived to the US in January 2006) . The problem is that he has never applied for his social security card, and he does need to have his SS card for medical reasons ASAP, in order to get medical attention. His EAD will take from 30-90 days to be received, and I have read that the SS office will ask you for the EAD document to give you the SS card (SS #) . At this point he does need his SS card even if it says "not valid for employment" , in order to get urgent medical attention. What can we do in order to get his SS card without having to wait 90 days to present his EAD to the SS office. Any suggestions? Would the SS office be able to give him a SS card even with the "not valid for emplyment" on it, since he needs it right now only for medical reasons, and not for the purpose of getting a job? Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks .......Cris

If you less than about 70 days from arrival in the US, you can get the SS Card with the K1 visa... but the SS office doesn't like to issue one if it's too close (or after) to the K1s expiration, then you must wait for the EAD.

If you need the SS card for health insurance company, check with them... many will fill in with "9" or "0" till a card is provided.

As a K-1 holder you can get a SSN upto the 76th day of validity of the I-94. If you are in this time frame then thats great. But remember that it will take a couple of weeks after applying to actually get the SSN.

If you are outside the 76 days then you will have to wait for the EAD

If you go to an ER they will ask for name and proof of insurance--IF you have insurance---If you DO NOT have insurance you can still receive medical treatment, but you will have to make payments on the bill. I didn't have insurance for a LONG time at one point in my life---and this is how it worked for me. Sure the bill will be higher than if you had insurance, but as long as you are paying something, they should be understanding. ONE WOULD THINK ANYWAY.

Just calm down and do the best by your SO....
