No Obama Afghan troop decision for 'many' weeks

Obama is facing rising anxiety among senior members of his own Democratic Party about any decision to send more troops to Afghanistan, in addition to 21,000 extra troops he has already ordered into the war.

Senator Carl Levin, the head of the powerful Senate Armed Services committee, said in an interview with the New York Times on Friday that he was against sending more men until training of Afghan security forces had been stepped up.

"I just think we should hold off on a commitment to send more combat troops until these additional steps to strengthen the Afghan security forces are put in motion," Levin said.

Levin added that the United States should send Afghan forces more equipment including rifles, bullets and trucks and called for the size of the Afghan national army to be significantly increased.

On Thursday, Obama's top Democratic ally in the House of Representatives, speaker Nancy Pelosi, warned of a lack of support among the US public and lawmakers for ramping up troop levels in Afghanistan.

"I don't think there's a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan in the country or in the Congress," Pelosi told reporters.

Change you can believe in. I thought Obama was going to win, lose or surrender right away. What's up? You mean he might send MORE troops?

We should be looking for that ####### Osama and that is all. I the Afghans want to live in the stone age...let them. We should make a deal to buy ALL the opium produced in Afghanistan at 3 times the market rate, sell some of it for medicinal uses to countries with nationalized healthcare (at 5 times the market rate...oh, we will BE the market rate) to recoup our cost and sink the rest in the Mariana trench. This would make the Afghan people or friends, deprive the terrorists of funds and cost TONS less than a military adventure. It would also make things tough on US drug dealers. Then we should hunt down Obama with clandestine services and shoot him in the head, preferably from a safe distance. OR send a cruise missle through the door of his cave. Job done.

Obama will not do that.

Hmmmm. A Freudian slip? I hope the Secret Service and FBI will be somewhat understanding when they kick down your front door.

My original post says "Osama". Not sure if you are trying to be cute or not. I do not advocate killing the President.

EDIT...I see where I made the error. Sorry. As I said, I do not advocate killing the president.

I know you weren't. It's very easy to mix the two names up when they're linked in a subject.

I just thought it was funny for a slow Sunday. :innocent:

Just curious if anyone actually remembers back to the campaign season and what Obama said about Afghanistan? Or is this yet another case of selective memory loss??

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I don't think the Afghans *want* to live in the Stone Age, but when you live in a war-torn country that's been plundered, pillaged and razed to the ground not only by several of the great empires of history, but also by major powers of the modern era - you can't expect there to be much progress.

Naturally of course, the US chooses to stand behind its vaunted principles and what better way to do that than abandoning a country that you first invaded and blew to hell.

The whole thing makes me sick.

I agree that most troops should be brought home- but for very different reasons that many numbnuts do. Just saying- Obama campaigned on something that he's following through on now. This is more selective cherry picking of fact that is being displayed by his opposition- just because.

and the obama chinnuts will never admit to his administrations double standards, distortions, & outright LIES to the American public now & then. people will continue to point these things out 'just because' we can. ;)

On this issue - what is the lie exactly?

I'm pretty sure I remember Obama saying that the emphasis of the current military action needed to be shifted to Afghanistan away from Iraq.

The only explicit claim I believe he made regarding Iraq was that he would end the war within 60 days - though as I'm sure you know there's a difference between what politicians actually promise when they make claims like this and what people might expect.

Riiiight... come one Smokester... I dare ya to list all them lies (with actual corroborated, fact-vetted, confirmation...).

Like I said... on Afghanistan (which is what we're talking about here), there has been no deviation from the plan.
