My husband has his 10 year green card and a UK passport that will expire in May of next year. We are planning to go to the UK for Christmas, returning some time after the new year which will mean his passport will have less than 6 months validity when he re-enters the US. Does this matter? Do Green Card holders need to make sure they have at least 6 months validity when they enter the US?

We just need to figure out if we should renew the passport before our trip, or if it can wait until after we return.

Still, it is probably a good idea to get one. As a general rule, I never leave the country without a passport valid for 12 months, as you never know what could happen. But strictly speaking, there is no need.

Cheaper to renew in the UK.
