Well, my wife and I were at a picnic on labor day and one of my friends brought an atlatl. My wife really got into that and she got pretty accurate. It's not really practical in a home invasion situation because of the ranges involved, but it's still scary. Actually, women throwing spears are really sexy. Hence Amazons and Valkyries.
 That's what I'm talking about!

My point, thanks. The magnum loads were WAY too strong. To answer the other questions above, she will use the 357 in the home, but loaded with low grain .38s (those I-live-in-an-apartment loads).

I've tried to encourage my wife to use the shotgun if she ever "needs" a gun. She still hasn't shot it and hopefully, she never will. As long as she thinks she's OK with it, we should be allright.

Shouldn't your house be safe enough that no one can get in, unless you want them in. I was the victim of a pretty serious crime. At that point I realized it is much better to make the house more castle with moat like than trying to defend the turf.

I would absolutely love to have a castle with a moat (and be able to engage invaders at stand-off distances!) but I'm limited by my budget. It allows for a nice shotgun... but not a castle. The nice thing about our law though, is a man's home is his castle!

As far as actual physical security, yes, it's imperitive to do everything you can with what you have to make yourself a harder target. That being said, why does a criminal sometimes have more of a right to victimize me than I do to defend my own home and family? We still have serious problems with the law in some parts of this country when it comes to personal rights.

I yet cannot get it ... ... what is it with the people of this country's love affair with guns??? Can't people leave happy without guns? I do not get it ... ... my best friend's brother killed himself with his father's gun (in Russia).

I wonder if people would love guns so much if they had one (or two) pointed at their heads (by criminals) like it happened to me and has happened to a few members of my family. People, guns kill! One thing I will try to NEVER introduce in my family is guns, even if my Russian SO loves them. I may reluctantly buy her a dog, but never a gun. Enough said!

There's a direct link between loving individual liberty, freedom, the pursuit of happiness... and loving guns.

To address your reasons of not loving guns -

Would your best friend's brother have killed himself with something else, or did he decide to kill himself because he had a gun?

If you've had a gun(s) pointed at your head by criminals and lived, obviously the guns weren't inherently dangerous, were they? Otherwise the guns would've just been pointed in your direction and you would've been killed. Perhaps it was the criminal that was dangerous and not the piece of metal in their hand? Do you think if all guns were gone criminals would be gone too? They'd just say to themselves, "well, I better find a real job now because my gun is gone."? Or, would they maybe use a knife? A rock? Spend a little more time at the gym? Maybe we could pass a law that would prohibit people from ganging up on each other. "Well, there were three of them and only me, but since that was illegal... I kept my wallet!"

Let's not get into a Second Amendment, US Rights discussion, but we really should.

We really should! I'll start us off.

The Second Amendment, in modern translation form, goes something like this - Every single able-bodied person in our country should own a military-grade rifle in case we ever need to overthrow the government by force or repel a foreign invader.

Where's my popcorn now, b!tch?

Was the gun pointing at you by itself? Was it being held by some human being? Who do you think was in control then? The gun? or The person? Seems to me that it's the evil people that are the problem, not the guns. They just sit there. Evil people are the problem.

The sooner you realize this the sooner you will have your answer. Evil people are the problem. When the government takes away the guns from law-abiding citizens, they are EASY PREY for the non-law-abiding criminals. Please think about it. No more guns may not be the solution, but until we can eradicate the evil criminals (Darwin should rule here.), then we should be able to protect ourselves.

I think what we should do, before we outlaw guns, is outlaw murder, rape, robbery, drugs, etc. We'll let that take effect for a while and then we'll see how great society becomes because, if it's illegal, then nobody can do it anymore, right? Seriously guys, let's make that stuff illegal. Can you imagine how great America will be if we outlaw murder and stuff?

Now we have something to discuss....

Take a country like the UK where gun ownership is near nil. Does the UK have crime? Does the UK have crime involving hand guns? How many people each year are killed in the UK in gun related crime?

Yes UK has crime. Yes it does have crime involving hand guns.

The last question is the critical one...the percentage of people involved in gun related crimes is lower than the USA. but are the criminals substituting other weapons for guns, be it clubs, knives, fists, etc...?

It would be the interesting data point to know.

Does the legality of hand gun ownership increase the propensity for crime?

There are several questions in there and from the limited data that I've been able to find here on the net, it seems that there were 59 homicides by gun in England and Wales back in 2007. There were four times as many knife-related killings.

Does the legality of hand gun ownership increase the propensity for crime? I don't know, but I know one thing's for sure - we now have 48 states that offer concealed carry licenses and last year there were more firearms and ammunition sold than ever before. What happened?

Crime decreased.

Why does every thread here always end up in a discussion of guns? Come on people, there are other things.

Wow that is a pretty big leap for the increase of firearms and ammunition sales and concealed carry laws leading to lower crime. I thought the spike in ammunition sales was due to people thinking Obama may limit the sales in the future, i.e. stocking up, that's what them news media on the TV told me.

It is a statistically oddity, normally when the economy gets worst we see an increase in crime - across the board. The economy has been in the tank, we should be seeing crime increase. Maybe all the TV shows like CSI are edumucating criminals about the science of evidence?

It is a twist on Godwin's Law, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law specifically related to VJ - RUB forum. Eventually the tread will have to turn to guns or pie.

You'd rather everything end up in pie?

So we've got concealed carry and CSI to thank. OK, I'll bite. "Thank you CSI." In truth, if we could convince criminals they WILL BE caught just like on TV, we probably could eliminate crime. After all, we convinced everyone that "hope and change" was coming and look how they voted!

The local newspaper ran an article about the percentage of unsolved crimes from last year -- 92% unsolved. And this was an "improvement" from last year. I don't think criminals have to worry.

After all, we convinced everyone that "hope and change" was coming and look how they voted!

It is!!! it is!!!

I hope I have some change left after I pay for all the government bailouts!!! Thanks W!

My wife LOVES cool wHip. When she first tried it she was amazed that fluffed extasy could be purchased from Kroger. She also called it cool wipe for the longest time but that's neither here nor there.

Yeah, like they read. As long as we can keep up the illusion of CSI on TV, we're golden!

I hope I have some change left after I pay for all the government bailouts!!! Thanks W!

See, I kept my guns and my religion.... I let them keep the change.

....I'm keeping the home movies though!

If you ever think about putting the movies on the net, send us the link. :D

Those will be very entertaining, for sure!

We'll see her hitting a better MOA at 100 yards than Slimbo.

We'll see him, naked in his BBQ apron, being chased around the yard by her wielding a rolling pin to bash his Stoopid head.

Speaking of MOA.... my wife is getting pretty good. She hasn't shot for a while but last time she did, she was posting groups in the 4 MOA range. Not competition level by any means, but able to hit steel at 300 with an AK is pretty good! (Offhand at that!)

Well gentlemen I also have a soon to be wife that is a great shot! I shot sub MOA very consistently, but we visited a shooting gallery in Kiev where he schooled me with an air rifle!!Not sure how she will handle 7.62 recoil, but if she shoots anything like she did with the air rifle, I feel very sorry for a home invader. I will take the time to teach her to shot a pistol just as accurately, as she does a rifle. She also informed me that she was taught to field strip an AK in school and knows field medicine. There is nothing submissive about Natasha, she is very smart and cares about our family for most.

Currently working in Afghanistan with the United State Special Forces.
