Almost no preemie can survive outside of the womb without medical intervention of a neonatal ICU - take away that factor and almost every infant would die. Furthermore, almost any baby born up until it's 39th week cannot survive outside the womb without medical intervention for it's lungs (typically, massive amounts of steroids), as most babies lungs are not fully developed until their 39th week.

The difference between a "fetus" and a "baby" is mainly one of location, whether inside or outside the womb. It isn't a biological difference, but a legal and/or emotional one.

I'll ask my sister the OB/Gyn about that... somehow I think your interpretation is a bit imposed on actual biology.

The biological issue is viability.

As you may know, most abortions are performed before the start of the third trimester, but that in itself isn't biology.

That's as I understand it - if the fetus can survive on its own outside of the womb raises a different set of considerations than you'd get with say an early term fetus. But even there its not clear cut - as you do have late term abortions in the event that tests determine that if born the child would suffer from significant physical defects/disabilities.

As to ideology, I don't consider it my place to impose my views onto what is a very complicated emotional decision for the parents. That's really the essential point about "choice".
