Hezbollah ownes how many seats in the democratic Lebanon government? Quite a few! Everyone knows their tactics.....which means people know it and vote for them anyway. They agree with those tactics. That's frightening.

For the sake of accuracy, Hezbollah has 23 out of 128 seats in the Lebanese government, less than 20%. On the other hand, Hezbollah has its own military. What would happen if, say, the Republicans had their own armed wing and were firing missiles into Canada, all the while threatening to kill any Democrat who objected?

In that case, revolution my friend.....revolution. The American people would not allow a renegade group within our own borders start firing missles at Canada. Especially if they were a small group with viloent history.....and assuming they had representation in government. There is no way a small group of people would frighten the majority of people living here into doing what they want.......so there's your answer. It is not unreasonable to expect the same from the citizens of other countries as well.

BTW - 23 out of 128 is an astonishingly high amount. People voted for this! That is some indication of the support level which people would have you believe does not exist. If terrorism is uniformally frowned upon by all people, then there is no way you could pick up 23 out of 128 seats.

That's precisely my point! As for the percentage, I was just pointing out that Hezbollah has no where near a majority, though, yes, it is still a lot.

The reason I asked is because I'm curious as to whether you think religion is ultimately responsible for certain countries being dominated by various forms of dictatorship (in which free speech is limited).

Muslims are politically active - unfortunately the last strictly revolutionary act took place in Iran, which was itself a response to foreign intervention.

The dictators and the people that allow them to remain in power.....including the people that work for them and the citizens that do nothing about it.

Religion (among other things) is used as an excuse or tool to attain power.

They did vote for this, but perhaps part of the reason for that is that Hezbollah does a lot of public works in Lebanon. It is not solely a terrorist organisation, though that is how it is viewed due to its anti-Israeli stance.

I wonder how many people vote out of that sort of immediate self interest. After all there, are people in US and Europe who will vote for a political party based on a few specific issues, rather than the big picture.

After all, GWB apparently won the 2004 election primarily on 'moral issues' (e.g. gay marriage, abortion, capital punishment etc). Comparatively, controversial moves like the Iraq invasion were relatively far down on the list.

let me just say for the record that gupt, nessaandcharles, me, and anybody else on this forum has no value when it comes to world politics, of course unless they are directly connected to a politician even then they have no value.

in my humble opinion the palestinians should just pack their bags and move on out, all that is happening in that area, cannot be stopped WILL not be stopped, so they are just wasting their time fighting and blowing this up and blowing that up. JUST GET UP and leave. The idea is to bring all the JEWS of the world to israel, obviously they(ENTIRE Population of JEWS) cannot fit in the current state of israel thus more land is required. So why all this fighting no reason to fight just kiss your neighbors and move to some other country.
