I am beginning to be a little more than nervous as our upcoming interview date approaches. I have a few questions that I hope someone here can answer for me. I have noticed that most people here seem to be able to get the utilities turned on in both spouses names, but when I asked the utility companies about this , they would not let me put any of the utilities in both of our names. They acted as if they never do this , and especially would not for someone who does not have a social security card or any identity( my husband). Have any of you run into this problem ? The only real proof we have is our joint checking account which we just opened a few weeks ago. This account does not have a large amt. of money in it , as my mother has been supporting us since he has been here. Neither of us has been working , he has not received his EAD , and I have been a student ,( my mother has cosponsored him and has sufficient income ) , so no proof on that front , other than her sponsorship info. I was thinking of getting friends and family to write letters for us ---do these need to be notarized ? I have phone records from the time we were apart showing many calls from my side, but he has no record of any of the calls he made to me during that same 2 yrs. We have saved all the letters we sent before he received K-3 visa and we have alot of pictures. We do not have a lease , my parents bought the house we are living in , and are letting us stay here rent free until we get on our feet. This will also be mentioned in their letters....but still worried that we do not have any concrete proof of living together and sharing a life together. If anyone has any ideas of things we might be able to do to establish more proof as a couple , please please share them. I am starting to panic. Our interview is Aug 3!! Thanks in advance for your help.

At my interview on Tuesday we had all kinds of evidence with us. All they asked for was something showing me on her health benefits. Other than that we had a joint lease and a joint savings account which they didnt even ask to see. Dont worry about not having bills, i couldnt get them in my name either!!

You can take mail sent to you individually but showing that it was sent to the same address, any bookings for trips you have made together, letters and emails sent between you, photographs of you together, benefficaries on life insurance policies.

There are so many things you can take that not having joint bills really isnt a problem. They give you suggested things that are good to have but are not required, just have enough stuff and as much as you can and you should be fine

Letters from friends, pictures and mail in both of your names going to the same address. The names don't have to be on the same mail. You want to show that you live together. Show mail in both names (on separate mail) proving you both live there.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

One thing I did that the officer really liked was along with the letter from the bank on the joint account I gave them a voided check with both of our names on it. And other than that I had insurance papers from my job and 1 joint credit account from khols. we had no problems.

I also stressed out big time about the bills. I was able to get my name on the electric bill. It turned out a little weird, though. On the "Customer and Service Address" is my name but the bottom part (the payment stub) is my husband's name. The Gas company accommodated my request by adding one more address line. in the first line is my name, so it does look like there are two names on the account. I guess it's just a matter of luck who takes your call.

Oh, if you really need to, Comcast Internet lets you open an account without an SSN.

I received my SSN a few days before my interview so I was able to open a bank account. But all I had to show the officer was a welcome letter from the bank.

All of these helped make me more relaxed on the day of the interview, but the interviewing officer didn't even ask for any of these.

Good luck to you! Don't worry. Having no SSN is not a small excuse for not having utility bills

Our situation is very similar.

My husband and I are also living with his parents until we get on our feet. We plan to have his mother and father write a letter saying we have been living with them From April 2006-present and they are helping us out until we are able to purchase our own home. I hope to get it notarized.

We also have a joint bank account which I am saving the monthly statements we get in the mail. They have both our names with the same address.

I signed up for Netflix so I will bring an envelope with me that shows the address too.

We don't have any health insurance. My husbands car is under just his name. So we can't really provide that kind of proof.

Other than what I mentioned, we will bring our wedding pictures, a scrapbook, birthday cards, anniversary cards, letters, and phone records.

Hope that helps,

Terri

As I understand it, none should care how much money you have at your joint account. You have tax returns and employment letters and/or joint sponsor to describe your financial situation. So don't worry.

Still, as it's always better to have as many evidences that your marriage is genuine as possible.

Maybe you could add your spouse to your credit card? Telephone bill? (Well, we also were unable to add me to the utilities bill on time). Do you have library cards showing the same address? Maybe fishing or hunting licenses issued to the same address? Letters, post cards? A lot of photos together and with friends/family? Air tickets? Hotel bookings? Maybe your spouse paid for youy studies from his account? Joint title to your car? Credit for the vacuum cleaner? We even had a rebate from Walgreens showing a lipstick bought by my husband. :D

Still, we did not need anything during the interview but tax returns for 2005, proof of joint health insurance, rent agreement, and current employment letter and paystubs for my husband.

Good luck! (F)
