FACT CHECK: Health coverage for illegal immigrants?

it's what the bill leaves out. There's no provision for how the prohibition would be enforced, or any requirement for people to prove they are citizens or legal residents before getting health care benefits. In fact, Democrats on the Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means committees defeated Republican-offered amendments that would have required people to verify their legal status before getting care,

And there won't be. Congress absolutely refuses to pass any such requirement, to say nothing of actually enforcing the other laws on the books intended to keep illegal aliens from receiving benefits...this in spite of what the citizens want. We've essentially been given the finger by our government.

-- Require electronic eligibility verification for any health care reform proposal through the existing Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system.

-- Maintain a five-year eligibility waiting period for legal immigrants to ensure that individuals don't come to the U.S. and immediately tap the system.

I agree with the verification but don't for a second think the US is renowned for health care. Maybe in the minds of some individuals here it's the best, however, international rankings and standards illustrate otherwise.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

No but apparently YOU are. Since you posted something referring to LEGAL immigrants as an argument that ILLEGALS will not be treated. Libs love to twist everything though, so its expected.

So calling Obama liar regarding a scenario that has not even happened is legitimate? It's the equivalent of walking up to someone and calling them a thief, solely based on your opinion that they are going to steal.

Dude come on. This attitude is worse than the Libs during the Bush years.

I don't understand why people get so upset about free coverage for illegals but think the plan is otherwise okay. As it is now, a large portion of American citizens effectively pay no taxes other than sales tax and fees (like driver's license, etc.). So what's the difference between somebody born in America who mooches off the system and somebody born in a third world country, who rides a raft here and then mooches off the system?

I understand the problem that would be introduced if illegal aliens were covered. We would further encourage immigration and these illegal immigrants would increase the number of people mooching off of the system. But simply saying that anybody born here can mooch off the system while people born in other countries can't is like saying that leeches in small numbers aren't bad. But even if the leeches don't kill you, you are still going to be weak and anemic.

Joseph - I posted a section from the FAIR proposal of how to keep 'illegals' from abusing any new system. I am not twisting anything.

Why would punishing LEGAL immigrants, work to keep ILLEGALS out of the system? That makes no sense. They are illegal anyway.

I didn't see where you were questioning it, just everyone arguing about illegals, then you posted something about legals being excluded for 5 years.

Luckily my fiance will be covered under my plan once we're married.

So we are supposed to wait for it to happen, then try to deal with it? Come on, give me a break.

Repubs had eight years yet you brought jack to the country. Increasing the wealth of a handful of billionaire's, and military contractors, is not an improvement to the country. Heck you didn't even do that well considering the economy tanked; as in worst recession since the depression. Why do you guys stand in the way of every attempt to progress America? Seriously why?

So far all I have heard from the right is that you hate the proposal and that there is a better private solution. Like what? Rep response: nah nah nah Obama is going to to turn America socialist and run health care. That is not what people are asking. So not only do you not answer the question but you guys lie and use scare tactics synonymous with any 90's film depicting repubs.

Instead of tackling the real issues facing America, Repubs are caught up in bullshit. Heck you are no better than the clown azz libs that have been obsessed with rights issues for the past 40 year. Yes, all while America has fallen apart. I cannot use any international examples to illustrate this either as it's obvious you guys don't give a shi-t. Best example, the fact the Asian manufacturers are kicking your azz, actually destroying, means nothing to you. Something that was ignored for decades by the corporate clowns and unions in crappyoit. We're American!, we build the best cars in the galaxy, right... How so? because we say so derr. go back home kangaroo. USA USA USA. All while Detroit resembles Kosovo, Sudan, the result of my last bad tacko and Baghdad in one.

Repubs and libs need to wake up before the entire country becomes one bigazz Detroit.

WHo is this YOU? I'm a republican? Thats news to me.

So because repubs had 8 years, (actually 6) to get this all done that means those of us private citizens should just bare our behinds and let the slapping begin? I think not.

There have been private sector solutions offered. Allow insurance agencies to compete across state lines, promote more health savings accounts, promote young people to go on high deductible plans etc etc.. All of these things would reduce costs to the consumer. Its not perfect, but nothing ever is.

By the way, i'm from near Detroit, and I wouldn't compare it to baghdad but its pretty bad. I am not for manufacturing to move overseas. I'm also not for unions, and I'm not for huge taxes on corporations either. So sometimes I can't blame them for leaving. Heck even the japanese company i work for is outsourcing everything we make. We get stuff from China, Mexico, Philippines, etc.. More and more is being moved out of Japan and the US. We still manufacture a little bit in Mt. Pleasant Michigan, and Bardstown Kentucky.

Allowing insurance companies to compete across state lines alone does squat. At the end of the day my employer gets to pick my policy. It also does nothing to stop profiteering in the industry. It does nothing to stop their from frivolously denying claims. Or the unreasonable and quite variable coverage between plans and providers.

What Obama is proposing is a baseline, a minimum standard that Americans will expect from these companies. Much like the military, private contractors are there to serve America; not the other way round. Unfortunately for health care this is not the case in America. Anyone who cannot see that is either profiteering from it themselves or doesn't know what the #### they are on about. Heck I have been here for four years now but the gross abuse of the system by insurance companies and medical litigation lawyers is quite obvious to me.

America is the only developed country in the world that does not have UHC. It's the only country that currently allows insurance companies to decide the fate of their people. That is why republicans death panel is an absolute joke. How about insurance boards, or are they looking out for Americans? Rubbish.
