The MENA region is the major front of an ongoing cold war between the US, China and Russia.

Oil is still the key commodity in the global economy - as such it is an important part of that equation, though not the only one.

There are, of course, plenty of people who made a lot of money off of the Iraq war, so there's an element of private interest there too.

oil

So, Bush got some oil for it did he? Have we gotten any oil yet?

Plus he was after Hussein personally because of the assassination attempts on his father, the former POTUS.

He was a cowboy.

So you say "PLus" as in you agree he was after oil because he was owner of the failed Bushco company many years ago.

How do you know he was "after Hussein personally"? Where is your documentation for this?

I don't know if I believe that rumour - but what I do find disturbing are Bush's claims to divine inspiration re the war, detailed in two conversations - one between the former President of France, and another with the President of the Palestinian Authority.

Its hard to know what to believe there - but if true, its certainly very disturbing.

yeah, that explains why gas prices are still higher than they were 5 years ago. and still no one saying obama is in cahoots with the oil companies like they were doing with gwb.

As a long long time advocate of the war I myself admit I was wrong about it. Now, the war was not about oil because if it was, it's the worst theft in history. The premise of stealing is an easy profit. The Iraqis themselves are who has the money they are generating from the oil. There is not some sort of secret account, where they siphon money to Bush. People might say well private contractors are benefiting, well yes and no. America has probably spent over a trillion on that war. Does anyone actually think they will ever make that money back? never. It's gone.

The reason I don't agree with it is because while the war was noble, America simply cannot afford it. Especially two wars on two fronts. They did free people in Iraq that were tortured and silenced for so many years but unfortunately wars cost big bucks. Money that was never ever budgeted for. Which is why I get mad when I saw republicans in the capital shake their heads when the president mentions it. Heck, If I was Obama I would have stopped and ask any of them to answer where the money came from for the two wars? Where? They never budgeted for it period. Yet have the nerve to call the Democrats fiscally irresponsible.

Now your rich Australian cousins are still with you, fighting side-by-side, but they have a bit of cash to burn. Plus a shitload of resources.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'm not saying he's lying about whats in the bill on this particular point. However, Obama's followers posting here (as opposed to supporters) claim he's never told a lie during the campaign or presidency so far. It just proves their blindness.

Nobody is saying that... every politician in history has lied at some point. It's a shades of gray thing.

Nice attempt at being witty, but you should leave it to the more capable. I suppose you can go watch the video when you get home from McDonalds.

Obama is a good president and his heart is in the right place, as was Bush's. While I didn't really like or trust Cheeney, Bush was a top Bloke. Trust me, I can spot a crook a mile away, Bush is not one of them. It's why everyone I know calls me eagle eye.

Chenney, yeah that guy is dodgy.

Cheney was a black hearted d0uchebag. I agree about bush, but will ad that he was not the strongest of character. He allowed Cheney to lead him down a very shady path with the war and domestic spying etc.

Why do people place such a big emphasis on the need for politicians to be personally "likeable"?

Surely its more important that they are competent and have the intellectual wherewithall to grasp the issues and make quick decisions.

Bush might have been a nice guy, but he wasn't really qualified for the highest office in the land.

I don't really understand why he was elected in the first place - it must have more to do with marketers and campaign managers than with his own talents.

The domestic spying claim is an erroneous as the republicans claim Obama's health care plan is secretly going to eventually becoming a NHS system. It's scare tactics and propaganda.

You guys are paranoid about the government but allow private industries and lawyers to get away with anything. Whereas, overseas, the government is our government, it's their job to know about us. Whereas, we have a huge problem with private industries, sectors or even individuals finding out anything about us without our permission. I mean realistically you give me your name and I could find out everything about you: age, SSN, cell, address etc. Especially with the use of skip tracing. Overseas, not possible and highly illegal. In Canada for example, once you seize doing business with a company, they must delete all of your records and they are not permitted to transfer or sell any of it. Same deal in Australia.

Things that are covered by the freedom of Information act here are illegal in the UK, Canada and Aus. So realistically who has the privacy? Which privacy systems works at actually keeping your information private? The level of information flow in the private industry, in America, is alarming for me. Whereas, you guys are worried about the government. To the contrary, the government there can monitor emails, calls etc, and most people don't care or cry about it.
