Hi I'm 22 years old, my husband (U.S) and I (Canadian) are about to send the I-130 for the CR-1. I'm trying to get all the papers that we will need eventually for the next part. I read that they are vaccination that are required like Hepatitis A etc.. But also Human papillomavirus (HPV), my question is should I get it now? I know that it is 3 shots and that is like 6 month process have to wait like 2 moths or so between shots. So, should I wait for the medical examination and see if the ask me to have it or should I get it now? I've hesitate to get it because it is 500$ (CAD) not covered by the health insurance. Also, what happens if I don't have all the vaccines required? Do I have to pay for the one that I'm missing?

Thanks

You only need the first in the series and they won't ask you to have it, they'll tell you to have it. They don't follow up to see if you've gotten the others after immigration though.

In order to assist the panel physican, and to avoid delays in the processing of an immigrant visa, all immigrant visa applicants should have their vaccination records available for the panel physician's review at the time of the immigrant medical examination. Visa applicants should consult with their regular health care provider to obtain a copy of their immunization record, if one is available. If you do not have a vaccination record, the panel physician will work with you to determine which vaccinations you may need to meet the requirement. Certain waivers of the vaccination requirement are available upon the recommendation of the panel physician.

Only a physician can determine which of the listed vaccinations are medically appropriate for you, given your age, medical history and current medical condition.

sjr09 is absolutely right. also at the day of your medical they'll tell you what other vaccines you'll need to get shots for and they'll put the appropriate one. exceptions of x-ray and vaccine shots makes the pregnancy. if you have ur immunization passport would be great. if not, there are still other ways for the doctors to figure it out.

I've read similar posts -- but I wasn't at all interested in receiving the shot, so to 'comply' with the medical examination requirements I got the FIRST shot a month or so before my medical exam. To pass the medical exam you have to only have received the first shot, the rest are up to you. I would personally wait to receive it. I called my doctor in Ontario, she ordered it for me, I picked it up at the pharmacy and she gave me the shot. Easy as that! You won't be able to "bypass" having the shot, it's a requirement for the medical exam. It costed my $275 for the one shot :o Yeah...pricey! Good luck! Don't do anything too far in advance....

FYI from what I've read/heard it's quite expensive to get the shots through Dr. Seiden.

Thanks to all for your answers :)

It is so great to share our fears here.

Well I'm going to the doctor next week and I'll ask to verify if I have all the vaccines that I need, as a child we moved a lot so I'm not sure if I got all my shots. And as for the HVP shots I was thinking to get it anyway, but I was saving my money, if I get it with my regular doctor I don't think it is a big deal, isn't?

Have a evening!

Maybe cervical cancer will make you interested in the shot?

How common is cervical (cervix) cancer?

Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second-most-common type of cancer that strikes women – behind only breast cancer. In the United States, cervical cancer is the 14th most common cause of new cancers diagnosed among women every year. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2007, about 11,150 women in the United States developed cervical cancer and about 3,700 died from it. That lower occurrence of cervical cancer in the United States is largely thanks to the Pap test, which has helped decrease the number of American women with cervical cancer by about 75 percent in the past 50 years.

The bad news is that too many women are still getting cervical cancer and are still dying. It's estimated that globally, one in every 123 women will develop cervical cancer, if screened only with the Pap test. This, however, can change for the better. In addition to regular Pap testing of all eligible women, cervical cancer prevention can be improved with the use of the HPV test (if age 30 or older) and the new HPV vaccine (ages 9-26).

What causes cervical cancer?

"High-risk" types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) have been shown to be the cause of cervical cancer.

Most women will get one or more types of "high-risk" (potentially cancer-causing) HPV at least once in their lives. The body's immune system usually fights off the infection, and most women with HPV never suffer from any problems as a result.

In some women, however, the infection does not go away. When the virus stays active in the body for a long period of time, cervical cells may begin to change and the risk of cervical cancer increases.

Why do so many women complain or try to avoid having the vaccine, at the time of the medical is it the cost, the hassle? I for one would try to avoid any type of potentially cancer-causing infection.

sjr - i don't think this is the place, really, for you to be giving medical advice. While you are entitled to your opinion - fear mongering is very annoying.

Hi Marie,

You will want to have a look at a Canadian Panel physician's website to see which vaccinations you need to show that you have already had and to determine if you need to get anything else.

http://www.panelphysicians.com/Pages/Immunizations.htm

You must have a record of the vaccinations to present to the panel physician. That can be a letter from your doctor for instance, or your vaccination card.

If you find that you have not had one or more of the vaccinations required you can have them done at your regular doctor - or alternately you can ask him or her to do a titer test, which basically proves immunity.

Aside from the HPV (because you know its age appropriate and you need it), I would wait on the other vaccinations. Many of the vaccinatinons that are required are no longer age appropriate for adults. My husband could not find his vaccination record, so it was like starting from scratch. As it turns out, only two were age appropriate, so he didn't have to get the others. But, it is up to the panel physician to make that decision, not your regular physician. Why spend the money to get another vaccination that you already received (but lost documentation for) if you don't have to?
