Hypothetical: Despite all the best efforts, the world economy collapses

Scenario: For the last few months, leaders in good faith across the world, and despite the various ideologies, had been discussing ways to prevent the possiblility of a wordwide economic collapse, but it's too late. Money is worthless. Rioting is widespread across the planet. In the US, the best of both parties have agreed to implement what seems the best solution: Declare martial law, and nationalize all industries. For the time being, local military commanders decide who gets what, and how much. There are shortages of everything, everywhere.

What would you do?

Call me stupid, but how could a total global economic collapse happen where all forms of currency are worthless? As long as there is a supply and demand of goods and services, some form a global economy will exist. I imagine you'd see more bartering if somehow currency is no longer valid.
