It would be nice if we could subscribe to new topics started in our respective "portals". I can think of a number of benefits such a feature would provide. I assume the "portal" link is just a glorified message filter, so I assume it would be relatively straightforward to implement such a feature, but I have been wrong before.

You can already subscribe to individual topics - open the thread and Add To Watch List. (Is that what you're meaning?)

Not exactly. I'd like the ability to automatically receive an email when a new topic is posted by someone with an SO from the same country as mine. In other words, as far as subscriptions are concerned, treat the "portals" section as a forum. When you subscribe to an entire forum, you receive an email notif whenever someone posts a new topic (not necessarily a new message).

That sounds like a good feature but not anything that is "coded" at the moment. The Portals page is entirely custom so I would have to code (or have coded) that update. I am going to be spending a lot of time the next few weeks on some behind the scene updates so I will keep this in mind!!
