I know a lot of people furloughed to lose 1 to 2 days a month. The contribution by my employer to our 457K plan was suspended on Friday. Lot of businesses closed and empty commercial buildings that never were used.

I've noticed a lot more business desperately trying to drum up business through advertising.

The odd thing is I really haven't seen overwhelming coverage of the unemployed and their plight. Few homeless stories. . . Nothing like when Reagan was president and we got daily human interest stories on tough economic times.

Yah I recall those nightly stories.

The touching ones where when they got the clip of the homeless guy in the cold with the cozy Whitehousein the background... why you could just imagine Reagan watching the homeless out his window and laughing with glee.

We've been very blessed. P found a really good job last December as a software engineer in a shipping and logistics company based here in Seattle. Thankfully, he' stayed employed and has even received a raise. I don't know if it's because he's lower on the totem pole or because the business, though based here, does much of it's work overseas, but we are thankful regardless. My job is pretty secure (I'm a teacher, though we aren't union and we don't receive tenure...ever) but we have had to take a salary freeze.

I run a charity organization as well and we've seen a huge increase in need within the community we serve. People who have never before needed aid are coming forward and weekly since last Christmas we've received requests for help. Thankfully again, our school community is able to help.

To be fair, you had higher than 8% unemployment for more than 2 years during the Reagan years and its only been that way for 7 months now. I was early in high school and didn't watch the news back then so I can't say if those stories started so early on.

I was just looking at the unemployment rate of various states, in some places it's really bad ..

http://money.cnn.com/news/storysupplement/...apmap/index.htm

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Nice link, if you click on the foreclosure side of the page, it has interesting data too, fla is seriously hurting, if you want to get a deal of Fla property, this is your chance I would think, in fact the people trying to sell before foreclosure would love to meet you.

I cannot believe it's that bad. Detroit is apparently at 20%...

Oh, yes. If you want to get something in Florida, do it now. It's all only a little overpriced now instead of grossly overpriced like it was before.

That needs no saying.

I just wanted to clarify it, in case the point had been missed.

The point is never missed to most. That's why A = B for so many.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

We struck lucky. Hubby was laid off a few days after our petition was filed and found work one week after the NOA 2 was issued.

His job paid really badly to start, but he is a hard worker, has really become an institution in the company and will likely be the last one to be laid off when (if) things slow up. At the moment he works anywhere between 40-60 hours a week and we take the over time if we can get it.

I had a look around, and I think there are jobs out there. If we needed too, I'd go and work my butt off in Steak n shake to make the rent.

I'm not to proud to take on work that doesn't fit the qualifications I worked hard for, because It's easier to find a job when you are in one.

I'm in Florida, and the unemployment situation is really awful here.

I was in high school as well but are some differences. Pres. Carter left high unmployment, high interest rates and high inflation but things worsened for a while under Reagan but people were used to economic decline in the 1970s and into the 1980s. By contrast, we've had mostly economic growth and this is the first severe recession in 26 years.

Back in the 80s there were only three major TV networks and no Internet. We've got far more info but less on the plight of the unemployed. Think about it. The people are pissed off about health care but little obvious anger among the unemployed now.
