What happened to bring his popularity down further than that of any new president in polling history save Gerald Ford (post-Nixon pardon)?

I don't know - the fact that he inherited the worst economy since FDR, perhaps?

No. He has done a lot on his own to create the mess he is in. He spends like a drunken sailor, and it's done no good.

He does? I thought Congress passed the spending bills. That aside, it hasn't done any good? What would the economy and the job market look like today without the stimulus package? What financial institutions would still be around today? You got specifics on that scenario? Please share.

oh so now it's not the president's fault. whereas before everything was bush's fault because he was the president.

I'm still waiting to hear what exactly Obama did to make the economy worse than what he inherited. Remember that he inherited an economy that was about to fall off a cliff. It hasn't. So, what is it that he did that made the economy worse? And what should have been done to make it better?

before it wasn't congress's fault when bush was in office, even though the last 2 years of his presidency included a democratic majority. now it's congress's fault.

gotta love your consistency.

I could hear whining before I logged on today.

So... if he has indeed furthered its downward spiral through spending... I'd like to know then... why has less than 20% of ARRA been actually... um... spent??

It seems like this is more idiotic posturing, that's all. We love to whine here.

Somehow-

I fear that there will be a really strong backlash against all this stupidity being mainly propagated by the angry and virulent strains of neo-conservative 'thinking'... and Obama and the liberal agenda (meaning most of us ;)) in this country will benefit from it- to the dismay of all the ranting fools out there.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Stimulus package that stimlulated nothing.

Auto company bailouts but mostly benefting Japanese automakers. See cash for clunkers.

Increasing unemployment.

Working on massive (more) government interference in the health care industry.

I'd had thought you cite something, anything as a success story for Obama but alas. . .

There's less that can be done as both parties are addicted to government spending and deficit funding. There's little that any president can cut because of entitlement programs. Not much flexibility.

You're pretty good at dodging yourself. Maybe you missed the question:

What is it that he did that made the economy worse? And what should have been done to make it better?

As for the role of Congress - I haven't been a fan of Congress for some time. Never claimed that the Democrats are doing well with the majority they have. They're very disappointing now that they have a comfortable majority in both chambers and they still can't get anything done right.

As for the last two Bush years, remember that there's this pesky little thing called a VETO and remember that it takes a 2/3 majority to override it. Haven't seen these kind of majorities in Congress. However, given the picture we see today, I doubt that they would've done any better with a more solid majority.

What's the alternative? What should have been done?

What would the jobless situation be today if there was no stimulus package? We do know that we would have fewer police on the streets, fewer teachers in the classrooms, fewer construction workers in employment.

No cash for clunkers? Again, fewer jobs in the autmotive sector - these Japanese cars are largely manufactured in the US. Dealerships would have employed fewer people.

Health care? We have the most inefficient system in the developed world, paying by far the most for by far the least in return, leaving millions of Americans on the outside looking in. We're being ripped off and something will need to be done to change this picture. When people are treated in lifestock stalls then you know that something is seriously wrong. What should the Presdient do? Just leave it for the next guy like his predecessor did?

12 times between July 2006 and July 2008. 11 of these vetoes were used when the Congress was controlled by the Democrats. Of course, Bush made clear on many occasins that he would veto certain legislation which serves as an effective tool to prevent passage if Congress knows that they don't have the votes to override such veto. I wish they'd pass legislation anyways and let the President veto it but that's often not how it works.

Look a little deeper Natty...

And Reinhart is right... the threat of veto has a lot of sway in Washington, unfortunately.

sorry ... the boys just woke from their nap and I only gave a quick look ...

i don't think everything the reps/ senate passes should be expected to be signed by the pres even if all three groups are the same party. a little check/balance can be a good thing.
