I'm currently reading the drivers' manual so that I can get my learners permit. You're right, I really need to learn while the roads are clear. I've also heard though that I have to keep my learners permit for 6 months before I can take the test. I'll have to find out about that.

I'm living in a small town (Middleboro) in MA (an hour outside Boston).

Oh dear you're towards the Cape. Urgh it's such a long time ago for me but I believe the 6 month learner's permit holder requirement is for minors only. After passing the written test, having a learner's permit allows you to drive (with someone 21+ and a license holder as well). Disregarding that I'm a complete stranger, I would have helped you practice-drive but you're too far! Driving is such a serious necessity here. I hope you get around this at least by spring.

Just noticed you're in Boston!

Thank you.. I've pushed myself to really study this driving manual and go for my written test. Even if I can't have my own car, I hope it will bring me some independence until I can. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Got my learner permit a week ago. Took me 2 test to pass it. I'm scared of driving but I will 'suck it up' or i will be stuck at home. No public transpo in TN where I live.

As to everybody saying the petitioner went through this and that... Boo hoo! That's nothing compared to being isolated and being new in this country. You don't know where to go when you have problem, the law is not tbe same back home, you have nobody here, your degree/career back home is pretty useless as of the moment, you are stuck and helpless unless your spouse provides help. You can expect all the hardship but once you are here everything is different.

I'm not saying life sucks here... It is just a totally new everything. It does not help when people starts judging you because you are damn homesick!!! Fact is an immigrant is helpless as a

babe when they arrive here.

Everyone's situation is different. Some immigrants have a great support network when they arrive here. Yes, they are homesick, and have to start over establishing themselves in a new career. USC's go through the same thing when their jobs are outsourced, they have no prospect of finding another job in the same field, and are uprooted to begin a new career in a new location. This is common when you relocate, and not necessarily related to immigration. But, many immigrants have friends and family waiting to greet them when they arrive, and help them transition to living in the US.

By the same token, many USC's make enormous sacrifices to get their foreign fiancee or spouse to the US. They may not get any assistance at all from their families here, and may spend years trying to overcome the setbacks they suffered because of those sacrifices. A new immigrants inability to get a job or drive a car might be putting just as much pressure on their USC spouse as it's putting on the immigrant.

People also respond individually. Some people attack new challenges aggressively and enjoy it. Others collapse under a relatively small amount of stress.

No useful purpose is served by either side - USC's or immigrants - claiming they suffer more than the other side. Each situation is unique. If anyone claims they are suffering then it should be taken at face value, and presumed they really are suffering. If the person who is suffering is a loved one, whether immigrant or US citizen, then you should try to help them.

in pennsylvania, if the learner's permit holder has a liscense from a foreign country, they can drive solo on the learner's permit. if the liscense is printed in a language other than english they need to have an international translation card. there is a time limit of 1 year from establishment of residence, by which time an in-state liscense must be in hand.
