I just got a job. PT, 1 child, downtown, 4h a day, where I would be with the kid for only 1,5h. Those 2.5h is for me to come there, cook dinner, clean up, do the laundry and wait for the child to come home.

I have 2 years experience as an au pair and 8 months as a substitute English Teacher in my country. I can cook, clean, I am willing to do a lot.

She asked me for my rate. I said $13/h is good, I did some research and I think this is that the nannies are paid.

Am I right?

Considering my experience and duties is 13 ok? The job is downtown, but it's only one child.

I just don't want to be used, I know I'm great as a nanny and an excellent cook, housekeeper. I am a perfectionist.

Does anyone know?

I think that is fair..

I make between 9 and 10 dollars an hour taking care of 2 kids but I don't do any housework besides pick up after the kids and do the dishes and the occasional load of the kid's laundry... I work about 2 days a week about 6 hours each day..

the rate sounds OK, but not great. i am assuming that it is not under the table, so that you get credit for quarters worked in terms of social security and a 1099 form to use in ifling taxes. use this job as a stepping stone while looking for another job with more hours per week.

I was thinking about something else:

I'm suppose to cook for the entire family - full meal, everything from scratch including regional dishes, too. Do you think I should charge per meal, or ask for a raise per hour?

Depending on what their dietary needs are, I would ask for more than that. If they have strenuous dietary restriction, such that you would have to prepare everything from scratch, then you should charge a bit more. Are you tutoring the children during that 1.5 hours with them? I used to tutor children and my price was $25/hour.

$15 per hour is the going rate here in Los Angeles for a childcare worker. If you are expected to perform the duties of a tutor and a cook, I would expect something around $20 per hour.

$13 is fine if you are only taking care of the child (downtown Chicago pays around $15 for that). If you prepare a meal for the child or *light* housekeeping is fine for that price. But cooking a whole meal for the family I think is asking too much. Tell them extra $20 for the day for the meal prep.

I don't know anything about the price of nannies. But what about sticking to $13/hour. After a month or two or proving your skills, then requesting an increase by a dollar or two an hour. Right now with the economy, I am sure they could have the pick of the litter. Just my thoughts.

I agree. Both cleaners and cooks would be paid more, you are doing all 3.

I also agree with MrsCat though, I would give it a few weeks so they can see how valuable you are and then negotiate a raise.

Oh I just noticed you posted this a few weeks ago, any update?

but she isn't doing all 3 at the same time.. she is there for 4 hours and only 1 and half of those hours would be taking care of the kid.. so the rest of the time would be spent doing the other stuff..
