Hello everyone,

Aziz had his medical exam for his upcoming interview last Friday and passed. However, since last Friday Aziz has been feeling really sick, but with Ramadan and all he cannot do all of the things that I have suggested in terms of keeping liquids in his body and stuff like that. Did any of your spouses complain of feeling really sick after their medical exam? What are some suggestions that you might have because I am not sure what else to recommend to him, especially since he is trying to observe Ramadan.

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope he feels better.

Can I suggest maybe, like infants and toddlers, when they get their immunizations, they also may get a little sick and feverish....after all, the immunization is a small dose of the actual infection, is it not?

That's what I was thinking. Does he have a fever? If it's been more than a few days he might want to get checked out since maybe it's a bad reaction to a shot he got. Either way if he's sick why doesn't he not fast and then make it up later?

I do not think that this is something related to the medical examination maybe some other virus or so. My husband is also sick these days and since he does not want to break his fasting he is getting worse every day.

If he did come down with something due to a reaction to immunization he needs to be careful being ill and getting dehydrated during Ramadan. His symptoms may be worse do his weakness and not eating and drinking.

I agree if it continues, time to see a doctor.

Earlier this summer Waleed got a huge lump under his arm after his medical and immunizations. It made him sick and feverish for the first week and his complaint of the pain and swelling didn't go down till about the end of two weeks. Waleed also gets really sick every Ramadan because he doesn't take care to eat or stay hydrated appropriately. Trying to maintain his mercilous routine while fasting does him in ever time and eventually he has to take injections towards the end and stay in bed. Becoming dehydrated during a summer fast is very dangerous and drinks that have extras like electrolytes have been recommended. That can be gatorade or powerade. Doctors often tell patients to drink plenty of fluids during a period of illness because it helps the body process faster it's natural immunities to get better.

I too am thinking its the immunizations... if he is ill, cant he break fast until he gets better?

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

The requirements of fasting during Ramadan are waived if a person is elderly and in need of medication, menstrating, nursing (new mothers breast feeding), and if you are ill, and for small children. So he can eat and take fluids. And if you are ill, and unable to fast, the days that you do eat and take fluid can be made up at the end of Ramadan. Meaning, if he is ill for 3 days, and miss fasting, at the end of Ramadan he would add 3 days to his fasting. But Im sure Im not saying anything that he does not already know. He probably just does not feel he is ill enough to waive his duty of fasting. But bring that up to him and see if he will just add those days he misses and see if he will go for that. Inshallah he will be fine soon and Im sorry your so is feeling ill. I hope he gets better soon!

Hey,

Thank you everyone for your advice. Yes, Aziz says he is still sick and I was figuring that maybe it was the immunizations, but that he shouldn't still be sick. I will try to explain to his stubborn butt everything you guys have recommended because I want him feeling better. He did say thought, that MAYBE he will go to the doctor tomorrow or next week if he is really feeling sick. I'm just so worried, maybe more than I should be. So we shall see.

Breaking of the fast under exceptional conditions

Muslims are permitted to break their fast of Ramadan when there is a danger to their health.

In this situation a Muslim should make up his/her fast later. The missed fast(s) can be made up at any other time of the year, either continuously or intermittently, except on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr and the day of Eid-ul-Adha

I'm sure he knows this but please don't tell him to add on days at the end of Ramadan since that would be haram. I actually thought that the first three days of the month after Ramadan were forbidden to fast but I can't find the reference now.

I did not mean fasting on the day of Eid. I meant after Ramadan and the Eid celebration a person can make up the days that they missed.

We worry more when they are away from us and the feeling of being powerless SUCKS (F) hopefully you are just over worrying and he will be just fine in a few days :)

Ok but instead you said,

so I wanted to clarify in case anyone else needed to make up fasts.

Thanks for the clarification...I will definitiely have to chat with him about that, but like you guys said he should know and now I feel bad for telling him to break his fast in light of being sick. Knowing my hubby, I really don't think he will break his fast, but he will be going to the doctor.
