I am from Canada and my finace is American. We are trying to decide which visas are better to apply for.

Does anyone know if he came to Canada to live with me, could he keep his American citizenship and be able to apply for a Visa for me to eventually move to the US. Which is the easier country to apply in ? Do we have to be married or plan to get married to apply and be accepted for the Visas?

Right now also he is self employed, does this make it difficult to show that he can support me, until I am able to work in the US ?

I have done so much reading and would appreciate any added input that someone could give me.

Thanks

Pony

Immigration to Canada, from what I've read, is generally easier. Take a look at these sites to help you get your fiance to Canada

Yes he can keep his American citizenship. He will be granted residency, not citizenship, if y'all decide to move to Canada.

No you don't have to be married, you can apply as a fiance for either Canada or the US.

As long as your fiance makes 125% above the poverty line (as shown on his taxes) then his self employment is a non issue, if he does not make that amount, y'all will need a cosponsor

Good luck.

Also, when you're ready to move to the US if he's a Canadian resident and you're married by then, you can do Direct Consular Filing (DCF). It's fast AND you don't have to be apart during the process!

How do I find out what 125% above the proverty line is ? And who would qualify as a co-sponsor ?

Thanks again for your help !!
