My little one will be 3 years old next week and I have not yet slapped her once. Nor do I intent do so later. There are other - and more effective - ways to let a small child know that there's a problem with it's behavior. When you slap a little child, you basically teach that child that slapping is an appropriate response to behavior one doesn't approve of. It isn't.

Its really amazing that you have (allegedly) done this stuff and not found yourself in court or police custody.

The police came down, questioned me and I was not arrested. Instead, I was told next time to report it to police rather than get involved. There were also witnesses around who stepped up to the plate and backed me up. After all, we are talking about Australia here. It's not some ACLU type of country. You also know perfectly well that the English legal system accounts for all variables; as in, what leads up to the incident too.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

agree

..no need to punch..slap or hit a child...if that is your method, then you already failed as a parent and human

I'm not really a fan of the childrens my self. Crying in public (or in private) is part of the reason. I also agree that it seems like a lot of parents are lax in ensuring appropriate behavior in public. However, I think that the guy was totally out of line to even speak to the mother let alone lay a hand on the child.

Furthermore, what the HELL kind of mother lets a guy get in FOUR TO FIVE SLAPS on her kid without going bat-schizt crazy on him?! I mean, with a verbal threat before hand, that guy wouldn't have gotten within 5 feet of me or my kid (may there never be one) without my screaming bloody murder and slaps of my own flying.

So, mom's got two strikes against her in this incident - failing to ensure proper behavior in public and failing to physically protect her young (esp with verbal threat before hand).

The worst thing you can do to someone who is already mad is make a threat to them. This is how people end up dead in America, especially in a country we he could be carrying a gun. She should have defused the situation. Grabbed her child, while the man was approaching and moved along. Then again, who is realistically going to expect a stranger to slap their toddler.

I have never slapped my kids or any kids, but I think some kids have slapped me around before!

Not if any old stranger came that close - I mean one who's said "Shut that kid up or I'll shut them up" Those words would have sent me straight to red alert.

She should not have allowed her child to behave that way. I have seen parents talk to their kids before even enterng the store and laying out the rules. Clearly stating that if you misbehave or touch anything, we will leave. I actually approached that particular mother and told he now that is bloody good parenting. What I usually experience is parents being oblivious to their kids destroying a store. I'm not talking about 2 or even 5 year old either.

Yeah, grab your kid and move along. That is not the time to play chicken or the big guy with an individual you know nothing about.

Parents should be able to discipline their children as they see fit (short of abuse, of course). Just as it is inappropriate for a stranger to enforce his own parenting techniques on your child (like the man in this story), parents should be able to spank their children in public without fear that they will be taken away after reports from nosy strangers who don't agree with those parenting techniques.

I wouldn't hit other people's children, I probably wouldn't even hit my own. But you have to admit that most of the time children aren't reasonably crying and, again, most of the time it's the parents' fault for not raising them right (meaning disciplining them). Of course, some kids are naturally whiners or hard to deal with but I don't think they are the majority. That's nothing I hate more than uneducated kids who won't even let adults talk (again, parents' fault for letting them interrupt the conversation all the time).

Last July I went on vacation to the Dominican Republic. My fiance and I were in one of those tourist places. He went to the restroom and I sat down on the side walk to wait for him (it wasn't a sidewalk that people actually walk on). Anyways, there was a family of 4 and the children were about 2 and 4 years old. The 2 year old was running back and forth with his arms open and everytime he ran past me he would hit my back. The first time I thought it was an accident but he kept doing it, and every time he hit me harder and harder. On top of everything, he started giving me a mean look. When I looked at his parents, they were looking at him and smiling (kinda like congratulating him for his new "game"). It made me so upset, is that really how you educate your children? You just spoil them and let them do what they want, and that's called love? I don't think so. If you don't mind your kids hitting you, don't assume other people won't mind that either. Of course, I didn't hit him back, I just gave him a way meaner look. He hated it, started crying and left.

Busted For Slapping Stranger's Crying Child

Georgia man, 61, threatened to "shut that baby up" at Walmart

Pic-> http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years...02091slap1.html

SEPTEMBER 2--Meet Roger Stephens. The Georgia man, 61, was shopping Monday morning at a Walmart in Stone Mountain when he crossed paths with Sonya Matthews and her two-year-old daughter Paige. The child was crying, which apparently greatly perturbed Matthews. "If you don't shut that baby up I will shut her up for you," Stephens warned Matthews, according to a Gwinnett County Police Department report. Moments later, Stephens acted on his threat, slapping Paige "across the face approximately four or five times." Though the child "started crying and screaming" after being struck, Stephens told Matthews, "See, I told you I would shut her up." After police were summoned, Stephens told a cop that the child was crying "and he just slapped her," according to the report. Stephens was arrested for felony cruelty to children and booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. Paige sustained "slight redness to the face," but was otherwise unharmed. (3 pages)

If the guy wants any cash for a legal defense, I'm in.

I could almost agree with you except for the bolded part.

Its one thing to slap a kid like ScottThuy said, to make a point, and another to slap a little girl 4-5 times.

You know the best behaved child can have an offday and cry for no apparant reason! Believe me that child WILL have a reason, they just can not always explain what it wrong with them! It is NOTHING to do with having a bad parent, some comments people write are pathetic!

When it pertains to the behaviour of a 2 year old, I think a lot of the comments come from non parents. What is so bad about a two year old crying? It happens, they do that and slapping one when it is doing it is not going to make it stop.

Refusing to use the spellchick!
