Hi Haole!

Question...my husband and I initially planned on having his parents come to the Philippines so we can all travel back together to New Orleans, which is where we will meet up.

Our reason for doing this is to increase the number of luggage/boxes we can bring with us to the States. We have wedding gifts (not a lot, but they are kinds heavy) and some other personal effects that we would like to bring with us.

The thing is, we may have to eschew our plan altogether, as we may not be able to afford to have his parents come over (which is kind of a bummer because my father-in-law has not met my family yet). So it will just be myself and my daughter traveling. We are each allowed one carry on and two check in bags.

As a reverse question that our OP posted here:

What would you suggest we do about the other personal effects we want to bring to the U.S.? Would it be cheaper to pay for excess baggage or to have them shipped?

Forex if you are sending a lot of stuff. Takes about 1 1/2 months.

you might wanna check out LBC hari ng padala - it's about $65.00/box, depending on the size and your location, and it takes about a month to get to the Pihilippines.

That is who we use and they are great. It took about a month to get a big box to Cagayan on Mindanao and the price was very reasonable.
