Honolulu seeks to ban bad odors on buses

HONOLULU (AP) - Stinky city bus riders soon could get soaked.

The Honolulu City Council is considering a bill that would impose up to a $500 fine and/or up to six months in jail for public transit passengers convicted of being too smelly.

The bill will be heard Thursday in committee. It would make it illegal to have "odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system."

It doesn't matter if it's body odor or offensive fumes that emanates from clothes, personal belongings or animals.

Councilmen Rod Tam and Nestor Garcia co-sponsored the anti-odor bill.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii says it is concerned with laws that are inherently vague, which opens the door to discriminatory enforcement based on an officer's individual prejudices.

Thank God. As someone who takes public transit - it's the worst thing to have to be on the same bus/train as someone with nasty BO.

BO on public transit is terrible.

Especially when my city has old buses that rely on the windows being open for there to be any air circulation.

Yeah.. here there's certain cultures that don't believe in using deodorant. Ughhhh. During summer, it's brutal. (not saying there is anything wrong with the culture or the belief!)

I teach an HRM course and ask my students if they can fire someone for bad BO in an at-will state... the answer boils down to NO due to cultural differences related to diet. We sweat what we eat..... and if our specific culture does not bathe frequently for whatever reason.. that doesnt make things any better... so the ACLU will have fun with this one in HI.

Probably the same thing will happen when some cities tried to do this at libraries and the law was struck down as unconstitutional.
