waiting2008,

I think its something to do with NC Field Offices cause when i was in for my inteview she asked me questions as to where does ur husband live, and she wanted to see him. When i told her he was in the waiting room she printed out the approval paper and asked me to call him to the door....

Thank God i dragged him with me to the interview just incase they pulll this stunt...and when he met him at the waiting room he was asked to see his Drivers licencse just to prove that we have been staying in the same houseand then i had towait to get my oath letter...

Updated with oath date - Brewie

Further to my earlier post with oath date, I figured I would write a summary of the experience in the hope that it helps others... I know that I learned a great deal from reading other posters experiences. Maybe this will be able to reassure people that it isn't as bad as you may think:

It had been snowing overnight in Chicago, so I wasn't sure whether to take the train or drive to my 10:25 AM interview. What does this matter? Well, it was my understanding that electronic equipment (cell phones, etc) were not allowed in the USCIS facility, I wanted to take my phone and leave it in the car but I didn't want to risk traffic being terrible and resulting in me being late; at the same time I didn't want a long train ride without my BlackBerry or iPod. I know, I know, irrelevant right... but I had planned on listening to the audio civics test on the way to the interview, and I also use my BlackBerry to tell the time (I do not wear a watch). In the end I decided on the train, and I don't really regret that decision as I got there on time.

When I arrived at the USCIS facility in Chicago for my interview, I first had to pass through a metal detector and put my bag and coat through the X-ray. I saw signs that cell-phone use was prohibited, but not that actually carrying them was prohibited. If you are scheduled to come to this facility I would suggest calling ahead and confirming... I did see people using iPhones once inside (playing games) but I am not sure if they had sneaked it through the detector, or whether I was just an idiot for not calling ahead and confirming the cell-phone policy.

Anyway, once inside I made my way to the 3rd floor and gave my interview letter to the receptionist. She handed me a buzzer (like the ones you get at restaurants) and told me that when it buzzes I should go to a certain door and meet my interviewer. I took a seat, but less than 10 minutes later (I presume around 10 AM) my buzzer went off and I went to the door. I met the officer that was interviewing me and she led me to her office. Once in her office, she said that before I sat down I had to swear to tell the truth so I had to raise my right hand and swear to do so... it was similar to the movies... do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

She asked me to show her my interview letter, Green Card, State issued ID, and passport... which I did. She took a brief look and then went through the civics test. She did not refer to a list when asking me the questions, so I would presume that each interviewer memorizes the questions/answers and therefore you are more likely to get questions that are easy to remember. My questions were:

1) What movement tried to end racial discrimination? Civil rights movement

2) Where is the Statue of Liberty? Liberty Island

3) Who was the first President? George Washington

4) Who is the Governor of your state now? Pat Quinn

5) Name two national U.S. holidays. Christmas and Thanksgiving

6) What is one promise you make when you become a United States citizen? be loyal to the United States

They stop when you get 6 right, and I got some easy ones so didn't get asked any more. She handed me a paper and asked me to read the first sentence "Who lives in the White House?" and then flipped over the paper and I had to write "The President lives in the White House".

After that, she asked to see my children's birth certificates and my marriage certificate. When I handed her them she said she was going to go make copies but I had already brought some, so I gave them to her and saved her the trip. She then went through my application.... basically the yes/no answers that I had already given. Have I ever broken the law? Have I ever been associated or a member of a communist party? Have I ever discriminated against anyone because of race, sex, religion? etc, etc.

After that she asked if the signature on my driving license (that she still had on the desk) was my normal signature. When I said yes she asked me to sign my photos (that I had submitted with my application) on the left edge with the same signature.

She asked me to say my full legal name, and when I did so she asked if I wanted to change it. As a guy, I wasn't sure what she meant but said no. She then handed me my application form and asked me to print my full name (even though the application said I should sign). After doing so she printed out a piece of paper that said I had passed my civics test and that I was approved for citizenship. She told me to go back to the lobby and wait for my name to be called, and that I would be handed a piece of paper that gave me instructions about the oath ceremony. She then led me out.

I waited in the lobby for about 20 minutes and then someone came out and called names. He asked for people to show their Green Card when collecting the letter, but the letter basically told me that my oath date was Jan 20th. The whole process from arriving at USCIS to leaving was probably an hour or less.

In one of my earlier posts I mentioned that USCIS had asked for additional documents in a yellow letter that I received (they asked for previous tax forms, info about a traffic violation, spouse's birth certificate, etc) but they didn't ask to see any of it in my interview. I guess my only piece of advice is to bring it anyway, better safe than sorry. Also, bring copies of important documents as it shows you are serious by being prepared.

I thought the whole process was pretty painless. However, as a disclaimer, I applied for naturalization through my spouse; we have been married for 10 years and we have two children together (5 and 2). I come from the UK which may be a relatively safe country of origin. I am sure others may not have as smooth a ride.

I hope everyone else has success with their application.

Sorry for posting late. Rosa's interview took a total of about 9 Minutes. A few questions on our marriage, me and my children and previous marriage, maybe 4 civics question from the handbook and that was it. Then the IO told her that the next available oath ceremony would be December 17th. Rosa came out and asked me if that was okay. I was worried that since that was a Thursday and we were leaving the country on the following Monday, that we shouldn't take the chance on getting her U.S. Passport prior to our trip since we already had non-refundable tickets. Rosa was not happy about this and begged the IO for a private ceremony which she denied. We went home excited that the whole process was almost over.

We recieved the Oath Ceremony letter on December 16th for the January 7th Ceremony. We got back in the states on the 3rd and went to the ceremony yesterday. It was a BEAUTIFUL Ceremony. I even teared up when the District Officer who administered the oath played Lee Greenwood's "I am proud to be an American" on the Television and got everybody to sing along with him. He walked around the whole room singing beautifully and getting everyone else to sing with him. I don't think there was a dry eye in the room.

Thank you all at the New Orleans office of the USCIS for making this a truly wonderful experience.

To all of our fellow VJ'ers.....We hope and pray that your journey goes as flawlessly as ours.

Alex and Rosa

karenros,

I was asked the questions but never asked if my spouse was with me at the time of interview.

Io asked for ID and showed him Passport , never asked me for additional paperwork that was asked from me to bring, I even asked him if he wanted to see them, he said dont worry about it.

Anyway, Congrats on your successful interview, hoping to be next and get over with that process.

Hi Everyone,

Waiting2008-Thanks for saying what your 10yr gc interview was for. Yes, there are "random picks" for such interviews, and sorry that you got "the luck of the draw" there, which is about a 10% chance of all cases there (as I was told by my former immigration lawyer). Glad that all worked With the interview, regardless, and how long did it take you to receive your 10yr gc? Oh well, no worries about that anymore, now that you're almost done with the whole immigraiton process, with citizenship. Good luck with this interview (and no, what I meant before was good luck on this interview....not another interview..sorry for the confusion there)...And hope you get your oath date soon too!

Ant

During the 10yr gc interview We were told that it was a random pick by the system. i was never told a reason for the allegation. i have talked to an immigration attorney regarding what happaned; attorney said it could be nothing too.

Are you referring that we will have another interview?

I guess we will wait and respond accordingly to what they send us.

thank you

Waiting2008

Brewie-Congrats on getting an oath date on January 20!...Good luck with your oath ceremony coming up, and yes, do keep us updated about such here on vj! You're almost done with your citizenship journey with your oath coming up!

Updated with oath date - Brewie

Shredshark-Sorry to hear about your situation about not getting the oath date, despite passing the interview awhile ago. Could it also be that your particular local office is busy, and are overall scheduling oaths later than usual, despite anyone's circumstances? Unfortunately, there isn't much else to do now, other than to wait it out. You can also try going to an infopass appointment, which could be more of help to you there too to further inquire about your case from the USCIS. As well, if it takes too much longer, then you can also try contacting other local politicians (senator, congressman, ombudsman, etc.) too. Hope the wait isn't too much longer for you. You're almost there at the end of you journey. Good luck for you getting your oath date soon too.

Hey guys,

It has been more than a month since my interview and I haven't received anything yet. At the interview the IO said that it would take from 2-3 weeks to get the Oath Letter and that my Oath will be at Kansas City Missouri Courthouse. Any recommendations on what I should do?. The dates for the Oath at the KC MO Courthouse are January 14th, February 18th, March 10th. I have to plan a visit to my Country and currently I can't because I don't know when I'll get the letter.

Karenros and Waiting2008-Hmm...maybe it could a local NC thing here, as for the N-400 cases, spouses aren't required to attend at all (though it's nice to have them for moral support, anyways). And besides, you submitted all the joint evidence alredy, so isn't that enough? I guess not, in NC...So yeah, to those who are going for interviews in NC...bring your spouse with you too...lol....Glad that it worked out well for Karenros here that they did bring their spouse, but for you Waiting2008 sorry that it didn't work out well for you when you didn't bring your spouse, but regardless, good luck for your case too and hope you hear about your oath date soon.

waiting2008,

I think its something to do with NC Field Offices cause when i was in for my inteview she asked me questions as to where does ur husband live, and she wanted to see him. When i told her he was in the waiting room she printed out the approval paper and asked me to call him to the door....

Thank God i dragged him with me to the interview just incase they pulll this stunt...and when he met him at the waiting room he was asked to see his Drivers licencse just to prove that we have been staying in the same houseand then i had towait to get my oath letter...

goodluck

Brewie-Congratulations for passing your interview. And thanks for sharing that experience in detail here on vj.... :star::thumbs:

Glad you made it to your interview, despite the snow. Good idea that you took along yor blackberry to study with while riding on the train. Lol about the buzzers...Is that only in Chicago that they have such? Maybe its because there are so many people waiting there. And yes, the "do you swear to tell the truth" part of it, is just like in the movies..Hmm..I wonder what would happen if someone said no to that one..(just kidding). Was your interviewer next to a computer? If that was the case, then the questions/answers are probably there on the screen for them to read off of instead of a piece of paper (that's how my IO did such during my interview). Good that you brought the copies of the birth and marriage certificates, as that saved you and the IO some time there from having to photocopy them again. Likewise, I was asked to sign the photos the same way in the corners, with my legal signature. But I thought it was odd that for the certificate itself, I had to sign with my full name (which you will have to do too when you sign the certificate for the oath), which is not the way that I legaly sign things, so the photo signature doesn't match the photo signature for me. Oh well. As long as it is acceptable, then so be it. I agree, "better safe than sorry", and bring all the documents required, just in case they ask for such, so it was best that you did bring all your documents, even though they just asked for the birth certificates and marriage certificate. Lol..and as a guy, I guess you wouldn't need a name change there (unless you wanted to change your name for other reasons..hmm..I wonder if any guys out there do change their names during the citizenship process?). Odd that they asked you for your green card when you got the oath letter. I guess they just wanted to make sure that you were the person they were giving the oath letter to? Overall, your experience did sound pretty smooth and problem-free. Lol..The UK is certainly one of those "safe" countries too, so that would make sense as to why your interview went well.

Again, congrats too on getting an oath date on January 20!...Good luck with your oath ceremony coming up, and yes, do keep us updated about such here on vj! You're almost done with your citizenship journey with your oath coming up!

My questions were

1) What movement tried to end racial discrimination? Civil rights moveme2) Where is the Statue of Liberty?

The whole process from arriving at USCIS to leaving was probably an hour or less.In one of my earlier posts I mentioned that USCIS had asked for additional documents in a yellow letter that I received (they asked for previous tax forms, info about a traffic violation, spouse's birth certificate, etc) but they didn't ask to see any of it in my interview.

ALnRosa-Congratulations for passing your interview and becoming a US Citizen recently yesterday. And thanks for sharing that experience in detail here on vj.... :star::thumbs: It's too bad that you couldn't have the same day private ceremony (by the way, do they do same day ceremonies and private ceremonies overall in New Orleans?)....but that's ok, you had a traditional group ceremony, regardless, even though a little bit later. If I were you, I would have done the same thing too, to "play it safe" to have a later date, than it is to have to rush for a US Passport. Hope you enjoyed your vacation too. Glad that your oath ceremony went well and was beautiful too, and it was probably more enjoyable for you to have a group ceremony this way than a private one before anyways. So I guess it worked out better for you this way in the end.

Good luck with the rest of your journey as a US Citizen and good luck in getting your US Passport soon too (in time for your next vacation, perhaps?)

Hanhan-Congratulations for passing your interview and becoming a US Citizen recently yesterday. And thanks for sharing that experience in detail here on vj.... :star::thumbs: Glad that your oath ceremony went well overall and that you are proud and happy now that you are USC. Wow, you certainly did have a big ceremony there, with 1200+ other people! How did they manage to co-ordinate all of that? Did it take longer than usual, since there were so many people? Good luck with the rest of your journey as a US Citizen and good luck in getting your US Passport soon too.

Hi All,

I had my Oath Ceremony Yesterday in San Francisco. Only 1246 new citizens took Oath from 103 countries :D. Everything went smooth and I am finally a proud and happy USC. Thanks all for your support through this site and good luck to all waiting. I will be checking once in while to see if I can help with any thing. Ant can you please update your list?

Thanks again!!!

Ant

Doodles-Congrats on getting an oath date on January 21!...Wow, what a surprise that the USCIS would be calling to invite you to a special ceremony, and would leave a voicemail about it too. Hmm...I wonder what the "special" part of your ceremony is all about? Is it at a special place or location? Are there some special guests attending? Is it to mark a special occasion? Or is it something else? Hope you get your oath letter in the mail too.

Good luck with your special oath ceremony coming up, and yes, do keep us updated about such here on vj! You're almost done with your citizenship journey with your oath coming up!

Hello to All,

Sorry about the late posting. Obviously the list has been updated to reflect the successful Oath ceremony in S.F. for the newest U.S. Citizens from the Bay Area! Meaw, Hanhan and Mohamp along with 1,245 other immigrants from 103 countries became U.S. Citizens in San Francisco on January 7, 2010! Glad it's over with the USCIS! Best of luck for those still waiting. There is indeed an end to the madness.

Peace, Evan and Meaw

Sherose-Congratulations for passing your interview and becoming a US Citizen recently this week. And thanks for sharing that experience here on vj....
