I just came back from my interview, and let me tell you - it was not smooth.

My interview was scheduled for 10.20am at Federal Plaza in NYC. I got called in at around 11.00. The IO was a no-nonsense man who hardly exchanged any pleasantries.

There were 3 points on my application that he got hung up on:

  1. My employment situation (I'm inbetween jobs at the moment). He went through all of my tax returns for the last 4-5 years and asked a long series of questions on how I support myself, how much rent I pay, what I do with my apartment while I'm away (I took many trips abroad), and so on.
  2. An arrest / conviction for a DWI from a long time ago.
  3. My trips outside the United States. I had over 10 trips, some of them close to the 6-month mark. He tried to find all U.S. and foreign stamps for each of the trips.
He then proceeded to give me the civics test, which was a breeze (especially compared to the grilling I had just gone through). I passed that easily.

In the end, he said there are two things that must be cleared before a decision can be made:

  1. He said entry/exit stamps were missing for some of my trips. He has to go through each and every one of them to make sure nothing is illegitimate.
  2. Since I have been arrested before, my application needs to be approved by a supervisor (apparently all such cases have to follow that procedure).
He gave me a sheet of paper saying that I passed the test, but that the decision was still pending. Sounds like it could be a few months before I can expect an answer.

Septem,ber has not been a easy month. So far from 23 applicants already interviewed we just have heard from 3 with a Oath date. I guess must be the Holidays. Merry Christmas from USCIS.

My interview was not smooth. I passed the exam, however, the female officer thinks my evidence is too little to support i am living with my husband. The interview took me 1.5 hours. She asked EVERY question in N400 I filed before, which includes my hubby's ex-wife name. Honestly I felt it is very werid. Of course, I do not know her name and she even asked me if she is a american....( Is it my business? I was thinking)

Anyway, right now I am waiting for her letter to know her final decision if I pass. ( sigh)

Maryces21-Lol...yeah, September has not been an easy month for N-400 cases. Don't give up hope though! And who knows, maybe you and other September 2009 N-400 applicants will receive a nice "Holiday Letter Present" from the USCIS. Hope you get a date for the oath ceremony soon too.

Odd that in your situation that they allowed your spouse in too, as I thought they don't allow spouses to be in the same room for Citizenship interviews?

I got a call from the immigration officer who interviewed me in San Jose today. My case was pending approval because I had not completed 5 years of permanent residency when I had my interview in November. He said he was approving my case and will send out the oath letter in mail. He was not sure about the oath date.

I had taken an info pass yesterday and gave a letter saying that I had successfuly completed 5 years on Dec 9th and I had to travel to tend to a family emergency. I showed my tickets too and requested an early oath date. He said he will pass on the letter to the officer. I think it did help. I was really in a bind about my travel. I was worried that the application might just sit at his desk for a while but the info pass appointment did help to get things rolling again.

Can I join? Had my interview yesterday Dec 16, 2009. And am just waiting for my letter on where and when will be my oath taking. :thumbs: The process was pretty quick and painless. ;)

Hi Everyone,

Vivekjay-Thats great that you got a phone call from the immigration officer and that you they were saying that you would get an oath letter in the mail after you passed the 5yr mark (lol...yes, they do house calls too, like they did my case as well for scheduling an oath date). Glad too, that you had an infopass appointment about and told them about your travel situation. Hope that infopass appointment helped for you, and hope that you will get your oath ceremony soon too.

Though if you don't get your oath right away, you can still travel with your foreign passport and green card, as they don't take your green card away until the ceremony, and you can still travel as a permanent resident and come back to the USA ok. All you have to do is fill out a form (which everyone has to do anyways) before the oath ceremony, and "declare" such travels, between your interview and oath, which should be no problem at all.

I got a call from the immigration officer who interviewed me in San Jose today. My case was pending approval because I had not completed 5 years of permanent residency when I had my interview in November. He said he was approving my case and will send out the oath letter in mail. He was not sure about the oath date.

I had taken an info pass yesterday and gave a letter saying that I had successfuly completed 5 years on Dec 9th and I had to travel to tend to a family emergency. I showed my tickets too and requested an early oath date. He said he will pass on the letter to the officer. I think it did help. I was really in a bind about my travel. I was worried that the application might just sit at his desk for a while but the info pass appointment did help to get things rolling again.

Congratulations on passing your interview recently. Hope you get a date for the oath ceremony soon too (and that's when you become "red" on the list....lol.....almost there...but not quite there yet...)

Can I join? Had my interview yesterday Dec 16, 2009. And am just waiting for my letter on where and when will be my oath taking. :thumbs: The process was pretty quick and painless. ;)
