Hi,

Haven't found much on this subject unless co-sponsors are involved.

In my case there are no co-sponsors. My income is well beyond the 125% poverty guideline.

I don't see anything on the i-134 instructions about including tax forms, but I do see some stuff here on this site.

I want to be safe but not provide an overkill of information. So, I guess my questions is straight forward. After including a statement from my employer, and my bank .. and pay check stubs (that isn't mentioned in the directions either) .. and copy of my 401k quarterly statement, do I really need to include a copy of my tax return too???

Thanks.

Best to call IRS and get tax transcripts fot the last 3 years. 800 829 1040. Free and call 24/7. Takes 4 or 5 days. If you are in a hurry they will fax them to you while you're talking to them. Free also.

Thanks for your input. I have to ask, why do you think it is important to include THREE YEARS of tax return (let alone even ONE) when there is nothing in the instructions that say they are required at all (unless you are self employed which I am not)?

Perhaps I am missing something.

Tax transcripts are one option of several that can be used to prove your income.

To substantiate the information regarding income and resources the sponsor should attach two or more of the following items to the affidavit:

1. Notarized copies of his or her latest federal income tax return;

2. A statement from his or her employer showing salary and the length and permanency of employment;

3. A statement from an officer of a bank regarding his or her account, the date the account was opened, and the present balance;

4. Any other evidence adequate to establish financial ability to carry out his or her undertaking toward the applicant for what might be an indefinite period of time.

So that's where it comes from. Some people have a tough time getting a letter from their employer, some companies won't do it. Some people also have a hard time getting a statement from their bank, or choose not to.

It's also worth noting, if you do get tax transcripts, that they no longer need to be notarized. People get three years worth to be safe, you never know if the interviewer at your particular consulate will ask for more than one year, it certainly happens.

If you've already seen this link, forgive me.

Hi LuvMyPortuGAL.

The latest income tax return is often requested by the Consulate to support an I-134 Affidavit of Support form...even though it is not explicitly listed on the I-134 instructions itself.

For those who are required to submit an I-1864 Affidavit of Support, the latest income tax return will suffice however the applicant has the option to present the 2nd and 3rd latest tax returns if they think it will support their I-1864 better. They don't have to but they can.

Hi LuvMyPortuGAL.

Well, this statement above is fairly convincing. I will include last years tax forms but I will limit it to just the 1040 and none of the schedules (that would be a royal pain in the butt).

I already have statement from employer and the bank, and I also ahve statements from my 401K, so I am not worried about having enough evidence.

I do want to know ... Is there a difference between "transcripts" and just photocopying my copies of my tax returns??? I also have easy access to a Notary (next office over) if I need one.

Any additional comments welcome.

Thanks again.

First off I suggested 3 years as you will need the most recent year plus "maybe" 3 years when adjusting status later. Sometimes ask for.

Tax transcripts are more valid as they show you actually filed. Copies of 1040s don't and can be faked.

Also tax transcripts are a brief and only a couple of pages for each year. EASY to get!
