we drove from LA to BC, Canada which is about 1300 miles... we did it in just under 3 days but we only drove about 6 or 7 hours a day.. that was plenty of driving for us..

Only n00bs drive the speed limit mkay :P (j/k)

I guess I have a skewed perspective on this, I can do L.A. to Las Vegas in 3.5 hours. If you have someone else to drive with you and you are driving round the clock, it should take you just under 2 days, provided that you drive at least a bit over the speed limit.

uh, where did I say we just drove the speed limit?:P

If it took you 3 days to get from BC to L.A., then you were driving slooooooooooooooooooow :P

did you miss the part where I said we only drove 6 or 7 hours a day, maybe even less?... :P

and in actuality we left Saturday afternoon and got there Monday afternoon, so technically not exactly 3 days :P

my hubby doesn't drive slow :lol: and he did all the driving.. he let me drive for maybe an hour :P

the first night we stopped somewhere between Sacramento and Redding and the second night we stopped somewhere between Eugene and Portland..

I've been planning my drive from Kingston to Santa Ana and it looks like it will take 4-5 days for us at 8-10 hours per day. I'm hoping to start driving before the snow, though I have been told to do the leg from Las Vegas to Santa Ana in the evening or early morning to avoid the heat.

I drove from Toronto, Canada to Turlock, CA (but only started recording time in Buffalo, NY). We took the I-80 pretty much the whole way. The GPS said that we did 42 hours of DRIVING  (not including stops, meals, sleep). It took us 4 days to make it across the country! Good luck to you!

I've been wondering whether or not I want to drive over when I move too (from London, ON to Santa Barbara, CA... so very similar to your route). I've been told it takes 5 days all things considered, at a relaxed pace (and I'm not referencing speed limit here.. lol) but I think 3 or 4 days of steady all day driving could be done. But, let's face it.. unless you're in a hurry, it would NOT be enjoyable to just be booking it through at 12-16 hour days. My parents will be driving over for our wedding, but I'm telling them to anticipate 5 days for sure, because they'll want to stop and see stuff all the time I think.. lol Although my dad's a driving beast, my mom would make him stop... or he'd stop just to get out of being stuck in the car with her a bit

We drove from Central Florida to Calgary last month (at the speed limit).

Google maps is pretty accurate really and no, it does not take stopping in to consideration. It calculates the route based on speed limits.

Our drive took us 8 days - driving around 6 hours a day on average.

When we drove down here my husband drove 14 hours the first day... that really sucked! But, like Ashen's dad, he's a driving machine and gets on a mission. The only way I can make him stop is if I say I'm going to pee my pants or if I constantly whine for several hours

I did Windsor to LA once, but we stopped to hike down the Grand Canyon, so excluding that night we pretty much I think drove straight to Oklahoma and then the next morning to Arizona (which means we could have gotten to LA in 2 days), of course driving a lot both days.

I used to do epic long road trips solo (34 being my longest non-stop) so my timing will be different then others as a 20 hour non-stop trip was normal for me back in those days.

Seasonal if you take I-70 you will probably have to really watch the weather in Colorado and Utah mountains as sudden storms can pile snow up fast. Same with Winter and Spring. The other option is just to go through Oklahoma and I-40 from there which is longer, but less snow (except in winter where I-40 in Arizona can be an icy hell...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Detroit to Phoenix was 33 hours. From Detroit to TO is about 3 hours and PHX to LA is about 5.. so the 42 hours is about dead on...

Best route is TO - Sarnia - I-94 in Marshall, MI to Chicago - St. Louis, Oklahoma City and then I-40 through OK, TX, NM, AZ and CA to LA. You avoid a lot of weather problems this way.

Like Warlord, I did the trip in two long days , stayed in Tulsa for the night.

It wasn't too bad for us. It was me, my USC boyfriend (now Fiance!! ) and my 10 year old daughter. We made stops for meals and breaks, and we only drove during daylight hours (except the last night... we had planned to stay in Reno, but decided to push on since we were so close to home - made it home 10:30pm.)

It was a nice drive. Very boring though. We also drove through a tornado warning in Wyoming (we didn't know it at the time).

If you are interested, we kept a blog during our trip:
