I was simply drawing a conclusion from a symbol in a persons username. Your logic assumes I am insulting him. He has a confederate flag...the confederates support slavery therefore if he supports the confederates he must condone slavery. How do we even know if he is insulted. He hasn't stated he is against the repression of african americans. He may very well be proud of that it.

Moderators can be so stupid

Why is that? The confederate flag represents the repression of an entire race of people.

an entire race?

Ok, not blacks in Africa but blacks in America?

Any less evil?

No, not really. Confederates and people who wave that damn flag are still scum.

why wouldn't blacks in africa also be supporting the flag? didn't they assist in selling their countrymen (rival tribes) into bonds?

I thought Lincoln, technically, only freed the slaves in the south out of spite and did not actually free the slaves in the Union yet.

Anyway, the civil war had more to do with states rights.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Lincoln campaigned on abolishing slavery. That's why when he won the rednecks said bye-bye.

evil always has its accomplices.

Yeah pretty much. Though its hard to say how much blame can really be attributed to primitive cultures in a land that was systematically raped and pillaged by the empires of Old Europe over millennia.

I am sure Africans didn't have slaves right? Africans just don't do that. Only evil white Americans have slaves. Yes the full 2% of them, therefore, everyone is a slave owner. Now try mention a negative fact regarding the African American demographic living in 2009; regardless of the figure, or ironclad stat, I'm being racist and stereotyping.

The causus belli was not about abolishing slavery in the established Southern slave states.

It was about whether or not slavery would be allowed in states being newly added to the Union, particularly Kansas.

The South feared (probably correctly) that if all newly added states were free states, the balance between free and slave states would go against them, and eventually they would face an abolition fight. Southern secession was an attempt to permanently secure the legal right to slavery and not be forced in future action to lose it. The fact that the South lost the war prompted the immediate abolition in the existing southern states, something that would not have occurred for decades otherwise.

First off he was republican. So think about it, when does a republican do anything without some sort of invested personal interest?

He freed the slaves as punishment for succeeding from the union. However, he did not free them in union states; even I know that. The civil war was not about slavery alone. Or are you going to expect me to believe that overnight their bleeding hearts just became compassionate and leaned towards abolishing slavery.

By mid-1862, he had decided on issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, though he waited for a Union victory at the Battle of Antietam to make it public. The Emancipation Proclamation was a calculated half-measure. It only freed slaves in the states that had joined the Confederacy, not in the Border States that remained part of the Union, but where slavery remained legal.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Not to mention the fact that, thanks to slavery, they are in the US today and not in Africa?
