Quebec Birth Certificate

I'm wondering which birth certificate style I should be using... the full-length (which I have) or the "Copy of an Act of Birth"? Anyone know?

The full-size birth certificate has both parents' names on it, which is what they want right? (Aside from my name, birth date and the location, which is also included...) Or should I go ahead and get the Copy of the Act, which is a complete reproduction of the original registration? Thoughts?

the one I have from Quebec, ordered online, is just a Birth Certificate with my parents names on it, as well as mine, the birth date and a registration no. It is the one they want at the passport office, so I imagine it is just fine for all official government requirements. I don't think you need the Act of Birth.

Just a litte notice about Quebec birth certificate for french people.

I am french and sent them an english form with a note to get 2 copies of my birth certificate in english. Received it 2 times in french and paid 30$. I called them back to find out that it is against the law to change the language in which it was first registered. So i have to go with a certified translator for that , which is not a problem. But ####### never called me just to tell me my request was not valid and never questionned and just sent me something I didnt need. Ive been waiting 3 weeks now to get a refund that i wont necessarly get because they dont do any refund usually its not in their policies. But i made the point clear in my explanation letter that its their mistake to send me the wrong stuff because of course I would have cancelled it if i had known it was not possible...... neways

So if you need a certified copy for your french birth certificate, you can find a list here http://www.ottiaq.org/index_en.php of certified translator in quebec. Cost me 17$ +tx to have it done.

For what it is worth, my birth was registered in english and I could only get a birth certificate issued in French. I know I had to have it translated for the AOS, but I don't think that we had it translated for the K-1. Have you recieved the instructions for the interview from the consulate? If it is in Montreal they may not require the english translation (of course the policies could have changed since I received my visa).

I am also in Quebec. I am going to order the long form for my birth certificate, since I only have the wallet size also.

Is it necessary to have it translated? for K3 interview or AOS.

For what it's worth, my birth was registered in English (for both the pre- and post-1994 versions) and I had no problem getting the full-length one in English...

I havent started the K-1 process yet...but ya know what, for 17$ i aint taking any chances!!

They wrote somewhere in the instructions that any documents in other languages must be translated. of course I a date is a date so they would be really dumb not to get it, and I wondered why cant I translate it myself...im sure it would kinda show if I would try to change any informations....hahahaha

But oh well, I did it so no more worries...I am the paranoiac type sometimes. Better to prevent than to cure it.

yeah, I knew it said to translate all documents. I just figured that it would be so obvious, my name is there, there is a date which is the date of birth, the 2 other names are my parents... hehe, maybe its just obvious to me since I'm bilingual My french won't be so useful in Colorado, unless I hang out with the Colorado Avalanches. hehe B)

Thats exactly what I was talking about. They told me that if your birth was registered in english (including your Act of Baptism) then you can receive it in english. If it was done in french then you cant receive it in english at all. That is all said in the Quebec's civil code. I used the english form when I asked to receive one and still received it in french. 1 e-mail and 2 phone calls later I finally got a refund but everybody says the same, it is impossible to receive your birth certificate in a different language than it was originally registered. French stays french, english stays english. Only way is a certified copy.

Aha! Well that sucks. It is also frustrating since we are supposed to be a bilingual country. You should be able to get documentary proof in either official language. I guess not. I know that Quebec has very strict language laws though - in fact, if you were not personally educated in English schools in Quebec your children cannot attend English speaking schools, only French. Glad you were able to get your refund - yes, they should definitely have told you before they re-issued the certificate in French.
