Unless you have a reason for having an SSN, say for tax purposes, or for establishing a medical record, you can wait until you get your EAD if you plan to work, or when you get your LPR, when you can get your permanent, unrestricted card. My wife just received her third card, removing the work restrictions a few weeks ago. We got one before she married, another when she received her EAD, and after a bit of procrastinating, we finally went over to get her latest card.

That's what I did too..Went there to inform them about my status now as a permanent resident.Just showed them my GC and told them to remove the restriction written on it.Now waiting for my new 3rd ssn card without restriction anymore.

This is a world record stupid agency.

We filed six weeks early.

They argued with us. Said she was not eligible. We persisted.

Filled out our application wrong three times.

Filed it in the wrong place and lost it for eleven weeks.

Relentless phone calls before the I-94 expired. Busy, message machine full, or no returned message.

Went to the office and they said there was nothing they could do. Just wait.

Phone calls, emails, office visit to congressman

I-94 expiration came and went.

Finally got a call from a genius at SS instructing us to have our I-94 time stamp changed.

That is an impossibility, of course, so the result was ... a letter!

We have two letters, actually.

One letter is the receipt proving we applied six weeks early.

The other letter claims we filed too late.
