Hi!

I am thinking of posting information about getting SSN or changing names, when you enter as K1-Visa. This information might helps other esp those who enter with K1-Visa.

Well, I got my SSN before my wedding. It took 2 weeks after our wedding when we received our marriage certificate. So, as soon as we got it, we went to the SSN office to change my maiden name to married name. But the guy at SSN office told me that he couldn't change it anymore because the system would not allow it anymore. He told us that I should had change my name, 14 days before my 90-days expired or else I have to wait for my green card or EAD to change it. Well, our marriage certificate arrived within the 14 days before my 90-days expire, and besides I didn't know that I have to change my name 14 days before 90-days expiration.

Anyway, I hope this information is useful to some. :)

or are you waiting for green card or AED?

thanks....

The changing of name 14 days before the I-94 expires didn't apply to me. The SSN staff in my state (AZ) did not allow me to change my maiden name into married name because she wanted proof of documents from Immigration (EAD or GC) to change my name. I heard that others were allowed to change their names just using the marriage certificate.

Yes, I wasn't able to use my new family name when I applied for ssn too. We'll have it change once AOS is approved.

Hi again...

When I get to the SSN office, though the guy tried to change my name. Their system didn't accept changes coz my I-94 expiring soon. And he said, I should have my name change before the 14 days prior to my I-94 expiration.

Anyway, the SSN staff here in my place is nice. He said, as soon as I get my EAD or green card, I could change my name.

Anyway, I have my state ID in my married name, so I am bit okay going out and I'm okay with my husband's insurance. My only concern is in the bank for my SSN 'coz it's still in my maiden name.

Unless you have a reason for having an SSN, say for tax purposes, or for establishing a medical record, you can wait until you get your EAD if you plan to work, or when you get your LPR, when you can get your permanent, unrestricted card. My wife just received her third card, removing the work restrictions a few weeks ago. We got one before she married, another when she received her EAD, and after a bit of procrastinating, we finally went over to get her latest card.
