Does anyone know if the Brazil consulate accepts cosponsors? I'm a student, but we have my mom and brother willing to help us out as cosponsors. I've looked on here and on the consulate website, but can't find anything that says they do or that they don't.

We're definitely hoping that they do!

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Actually, who accepts the co-sponsor is the USA not Brazil Consulate, plus, our interview is at American Embassy/Consulate in Rio. The co-sponsor rule it's a USA rule and goes for everyone ;)

In short words, USA wants you to co-sponsor your fiancee and future wife to make sure she won't be a government problem in the future, or claim free healthy assistance and so on. (it makes you or the co-sponsor responsible for her financially until she became a Citizen if she wants to, even if you get a divorce).

Hope it helps,

Beinha

P.S.: As "you to co-sponsor" I mean you or your parents if you can't prove the amount listed on their list: Form I-864P.pdf "I-864P, Poverty Guidelines"

Thanks for the response.

Yes, that's right, we'll have the interview at the US Embassy/Consulate in Rio, Brazil.

I'm a medical student, so I am unable to have a job. I'll be filling out an I134 as the primary sponsor, but I'll need to use a cosponsor in order to fulfill the financial support requirement.

I'm asking the question because I've read on here that US consulates in some countries don't accept the use of cosponors if the petitioner (primary sponsor) doesn't meet the income requirement.

So, I'm wanting to confirm that the US Consulate in Brazil, where we'll have the interview for my fiancee's K-1 visa, accepts cosponsors.

Many thanks

Not every consulate does accept cosponsors. Also the sponsor is the one who makes sure the fiancee will not be a problem, the cosponsor is only necessary when the sponsor cannot totally fulfill this themselves.

1. Brazil does accept.

2. His case is exactly the case where the co-sponsor is necessary to fulfill the requirements.

3. Rio Embassy email: ImmigrationRio@state.gov -- The best way to have your answers, they will answer you in less then 2 days.

I was not implying Brazil would not accept a cosponsor. I just wanted to clarify that not every consulate does as you implied when you stated "The co-sponsor rule it's a USA rule and goes for everyone" which is an untrue statement.

Thanks for the help.

I'm going to email the embassy to ask them.

Maybe someone here has used a cosponsor in Brazil? Has anyone had experience with this in Brazil?

I know someone who has. Her interview was about 3 to 4 years ago and everything went well. I haven't talked to her, could not find her anymore, but as I know she's happy with her hubby. :)

Remember you have to prove what Beinha said above.

Good luck. :star:

For the I-134 your cosponsor must meet the income requirements alone, no combining of income/assets. That is possible with the I-864 which you will submit at the Adjustment of Status phase.

From my time here on VJ I've seen that most consulates will accept co-sponsors for the I-134. Vietnam (where my wife is from) is one consulate that does not. As a fellow VJ'er experienced with Brazil has stated already, you will be able to use a co-sponsor.

Best of luck to you.
