Topeka turns down PETA money for potholes

TOPEKA | Topeka’s mayor says he’s as concerned about the mistreatment of chickens as the next guy but he’s not ready to create a political statement about it.

Mayor Bill Bunten said he will not support accepting an offer from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to give the city $6,000 to repair potholes.

The offer comes after KFC recently chose Topeka as one of four cities to receive $3,000 for pothole repair. About 60 holes will be patched and then painted with the phrase “Re-Freshed by KFC.”

PETA, in a letter to Bunten, offered to double KFC’s payment and have the potholes stenciled with a demonic-looking Colonel Sanders and the phrase “KFC tortures animals.”

Bunten said that while KFC’s money is for road repair, PETA is pushing a political agenda. ———

The Honorable Bill Bunten

Mayor of Topeka

Dear Mayor Bunten:

I am writing on behalf of PETA about KFC's offer to repair your city's potholes. We would like to offer you twice the amount of money that KFC has paid if you stencil "Kentucky Fried Cruelty" artwork (see attached) over all the newly patched potholes. Motorists and pedestrians should know that there is a mile-long record of cruelty to animals behind KFC's business interests. We'd like to counter KFC's attempt to market cruelty to Topeka residents but allow the much needed road repairs to continue.

Chickens killed for KFC's fast-food outlets grow up in filthy, extremely crowded sheds, mired in their own waste with no room to even spread their wings. They are drugged and bred to grow so large so quickly that their young bones often become crippled under the weight of their massive upper bodies. At the slaughterhouse, the birds often suffer broken wings and legs when they are dumped from trucks--they are handled as if they were bricks, not living beings made of flesh and blood. Then their legs are slammed into metal shackles--usually resulting in more broken bones--and they have their throats cut while they are still conscious. Many birds are scalded to death when they enter the defeathering tanks. Members of KFC's own animal welfare advisory board have resigned in disgust at KFC's failure to stop the worst abuses of chickens raised and killed for its restaurants.

By accepting PETA's assistance, Topeka residents can rest assured that their streets will be refurbished with compassion, not cruelty. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Tracy Reiman

Executive Vice President

F.U.C.K. PETA

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

PETA should have gone with something more subtle. "Eat more tofu".

I can see more companies paying for potholes and other repairs in return for ad space.

I thought this thread was titled:

Topeka turns down PETA money for potatoes.

Some frequent posters take liberties with the headlines.

Ok, who is going to read a pothole? Dumb idea. It might be cheaper and more efficient to pay for billboard.

Ever repair a road with billboards?

No, but I have seen a hole in the floor fixed with a road sign.
