Sheehan returns to rebuke Obama

After spending weeks dogging George W. Bush's presidential vacations, anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan is now trying to make life uncomfortable for President Barack Obama.

Sheehan used to pitch a peace camp near Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, becoming a symbol of the anti-war movement after her son Casey died in action in Iraq.

On Thursday, she and a band of anti-war protesters turned up outside the media center used by journalists covering Obama's vacation on the well-heeled east coast resort island of Martha's Vineyard.

"The reason I am here is because ... even though the facade has changed in Washington DC, the policies are still the same," Sheehan told a handful of journalists, against a backdrop of her "Camp Casey" banner.

She told US peace activists to wake up and protest Obama's escalation of the war in Afghanistan, and complained that despite the president's anti-war stance, US troops remained in Iraq.

"We have to realize, it is not the president who is power, it is not the party that is in power it is the system that stays the same, no matter who is in charge."

"We are here to make the wars unpopular again," she said.

The two wars are entirely different.

Of course, she has every right to protest, and to organize her protests.

In this case I support the view that Iraq was a war of choice entered under erroneous principles (WMD, clear and present danger to US).

I am perplexed by the opposition to the war in Afghanistan. Have people so quickly forgotten the 2,974 innocent people killed on 9/11, and where the murderers came from? If ever there was a war of necessity surely this is it.

Which is more important, that there are people protesting war or the 'fair and balanced' coverage of the people protesting war? Tune in later to watch the 'fair and balanced' media fight it out to the death!

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

The focus of attention has been off the war for some time - while it was a major campaign platform in the 2004 presidential campaign, it certainly wasn't in the 2008. Both parties had to do lip service, naturally - but there was by then broad recognition of the need for the major parties to distance themselves from the last administration; and that the so-called War on Terror belonged very much to the Bush administration.

Hello McFly, it's not 2001 or 2003 but 2009. Like many wars, much attention is given only the road to war and the opening military actions especially when there are no dramatic breakthoughs. You can believe the reasons behind the Iraq War were dubious but surely Obama's war of choice in Afghanistan doesn't make for visible progress.

The allies that Obama led us to believe would back a war sans Bush are nowhere to be found. Exactly how the last 8 years "avenged" 9/11 is unclear. The Taliban were overthrown and went back to the mountains and Pakistan to regroup. Al Qaeda does its thing as well. Obama has never made his war aims to the public a priority or at least hasn't explain how they lead to far better situation than under Bush.

Speaking of Sheehan, has anyone actually seen any coverage of her lately? Has anyone noticed how the national TV media aren't profiling those KIA anymore? They allow coverage of flag draped coffins at Dover AFB but I haven't any footage beyond talk of the original ban on coverage.

There was international coverage of her in 2005 but now she can't get a gig.
