But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

My kids live in Brazil with my ex. My oldest son is 17. He has one year of high school left and needs to do his college applications this fall.

He is a complete geek, as I was. He will probably be either a math or physics major, and wind up somewhere in the sciences or a technical field. I keep trying to encourage him to be a quant (quantitative analyst) at a trading firm. It's the best way I know to do true math/numerical analysis/computing with high-end toys, and make a really good living at it. He's cool to the idea, mainly because I'm suggesting it and I'm a f*ckwad as far as he's concerned.

He had been shortlisting 3 schools in Canada - Waterloo, University of Toronto and Carleton (my alma mater BSc). But now he's thinking of the Technion in Israel (my other alma mater MSc). I'm ok with that option, Technion is a great school, but it would come with compulsory military service in the Israeli army. So, to the second part of Nessa's poll, it looks like he could be in uniform regardless of what I think.

I salute all those who serve and defend our freedom. Political differences aside, everyone should recognize that our way of life does not come cheaply and is built upon the sacrifice of the military and their families.

I'm Army but I would recommend Air Force instead... much better quality of life. Privates in the Air Force get better food & housing than field grade officers in the Army!

however, rank progression is slower in the air force.

Husband was in both and thought the AF was full of loosey-goosey sissy pants. He liked his Army structure. Plus they taught him how to keep his clothes folded and put away properly. Heck, just for that alone I'm giving my kids to the military for proper raising.

As a 'flag waving not-so-much-in the armchair' veteran- who is certainly not gutless--I said NO to would I want my son joining the Army. If he really wanted to be a part of the Military, I would steer him towards the Air Force and their professions ( after college).

It is.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I'm pretty sure the IDF will let him graduate first... he can dodge it later.

No, I never said, thought or implied that. I will be happy with my son doing whatever makes him happy, but if he were to be interested in the Military I would steer him towards the AF because (IMO and experience) there is a wider variety of career fields post-air force than Army....example- aerospace and the likes.

I spent 4 years at Ft Lewis with the 1st ASOG (I CORPS) doing Army special forces special ops support, then 6 months in Bosnia with the Army 82nd Airbourne. In fact I spent more of my AF career as part of a rapid deployment Airbourne Army team than AF.. I admired and respected those folks as much as any other member of the military of any branch AD or not.
