"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," she [Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.)] told the crowd. "I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington."

The phrase "great white hope," which is also the title of a 1967 play, referred to the search for a white boxer to unseat Jack Johnson, an African-American, as world heavyweight champion in 1908. Johnson's victory had infuriated racist whites, who began calling for a "great white hope" to overthrow him. The title was eventually handed to Jim L. Jeffries, whom Johnson defeated in their highly publicized fight in 1910.

"I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro," Jeffries said.

To be fair, the conservative brain trust of the last decade is NOT the cream of the crop, merely the most vocal and connected. There are some out there, they just happen to be Libertarians

I'm wondering when this form of extremism among the Right is going to fade out and return to the shadows where it belongs? Where are the modern moderate or liberal voices of the Republican Party? Where are the Republicans who voted for Social Security and Medicare?

I'd sooner blame the nature of the beast. Even in the world of news media, one would expect a higher level of scrutiny and ethics. Sadly, the news is simply a more polished version of reality t.v.

People have always chosen to associate themselves with people who share their values. People like themselves.

If there's a reason why this Kansas Congresswoman is an idiot, why so many New York City council members are idiots, why Michelle Bachmann is an idiot, that's the reason.
