Think of it this way. If you're a home "owner" with a mortgage, what are you more concerned with - the size of your remaining mortgage balance or your ability to make your monthly payment (function of amount and your income)?

As long as we don't default on our outstanding debt, it's actually not that bad. That's all Cheney was saying when he said deficits don't matter. And I happen to agree with Darth Vader on this one.

Sure AJ but the problem is (since we are using the Mortgage concept) is we don't have a "fixes" mortgage.

Its more like a Balloon mortgage.

Mean while our home owner (economy) is bringing home less and less money.

How long do you think we can stay in this house?

I realize that our national debt payments aren't fixed. But... nor does it come with a balloon payment. Not all our paper will mature at the same time.

And here's the thing of true beauty - we can stay in this house forever! Who's gonna come and 'repossess' this country, the Saudis? The Chinese? Give me a fuсking break. We are the borrower and we are also the banker.

I just think it's such a stupid article. I presume the idea is that somehow the Democrats are not only ruining the economy but also endangering the very fabric of democracy with this 'out of control' spending blah blah blah - talk about hyperbole to make a not very good point

MC you presumed wrong, if you read the piece you will see he lays it on both parties as do I.

He blames it on both parties, sure - but his solution amounts to "say no" to the American people.

His whole premise appears to be that the American people are greedy and self-serving - unreasonably wanting things regardless of cost and responsibility and that they elect similarly self-serving politicians to satisfy that greed.

Its subtle, but he is in effect suggesting that the politicians should be the ones driving policy, regardless of the prevailing public mood.

No, I presumed correctly because neither of you suggested that 'democracy' was flawed until the Democrats were in the position of power. At least be honest to yourself Danno, if not to anyone else. You don't like liberal policies and you will do anything you can to prevent them being implemented, even if that means crashing the democracy bus
