Many of you have brought your fiancee over to the US and married them. I am on the same boat, but marrying them and get a marriage certificate is not easy as i thought. Please share your experiences, and tell me the steps (such as forms you filled out, fees you paid, how long you had to wait, stuff like that) you did from start to finish on how to get a marriage certificate within 90 days.

It depends on the county and state you are in.. go to the county clerk website for your county and there will be info about it... let me know which county and I can help...

Don't feel overwhelm man. It's easy here in the States than obtain the cert. in Vietnam. I have to do the affidavit of single status then brought over vn with the i-onethirty (sorry my number three doesn't work), then go to the hospital to get a mental test. Afterward we have to go turn it in and wait for an interview. After the interview then we wait if they pass us then we sign the cert. It takes around 5 weeks and lots of driving back and forth.

I don't know how it works here in the States so not much help from me but that is my experience.

Both must go to the local court clerk and apply. In Virginia it takes only a few minutes and then you're free to marry. They just need to see valid photo IDs and other proof of who you are and your residence. Other states will be different, and perhaps require a waiting period before marriage.

If you are in OC...

To complete the application for a Marriage License a couple must:

Appear together in person.

Each present one form of a valid non-expired photo identification (driver's license, passport).

If divorced within the last 90 days, provide proof of divorce decree or dissolution/termination of SRDP. If spouse is deceased, please provide copy of death certificate.

and 61.50 for the license along with an extra 28.00 to have them do the ceremony...

What? You ask folks in here to show you the steps how to marry someone IN THE STATES? How old are you? 14? What's next? Instructions on how to make love to your wife?

A more practical and interesting question would be "Please show me the details how to organize a traditional VNese wedding with all the bells and whistles."

Pick up the phone and phone your county clerk and ask "Please tell me how to apply for a marriage license."

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

Make sure you ask the clerk about getting a copy of the marriage CERTIFICATE quickly after the marriage. The license alone isn't enough for AOS, and you DON'T want to go through the state's vital statistics department for the certificate - they are currently taking more than six months to process requests for marriage and divorce documents, and they strongly recommend you get records from the county instead.

12/29/2009 - Married in Oakland, CA!

That was pretty funny; I think Dau Que got up on the wrong side of the bed. I'm glad you ask that question calilove because I didn't know either. I wonder how long it usually takes after the pastor or court person signs the marriage certificate for you to get a copy of it for AOS? We're getting married in 2 and 1/2 months which will only leave me with a couple of weeks left of the 90 days.

When apply for AOS, any document not in English has to be translated (birth cirtificate from Vietnam). Do they accept the translation was made in Vietnam or it has to be done in US? Tks

As long as it is accompanied by the certified document or original (not just a photcopy of the original) and the person doing the translation certifies that they are a qualified translator... some folks here have translated thier own....
