Hi TayRivers.

Just an FYI, I wasn't directing my rant/post at you personally -- i agree with a lot of what you say -- I'm here to learn and to have a little internet fun but not at anyone's expense. I don't like to hurt people's feelings or make people feel bad or take away from something that someone else thinks of as important online or in real-life. I am a good, kind person and feel that because of that, my joking around and my opinion is valid, you know? I expect the same to be given to me as well. I find, personally, in a lot of areas, we, as internet entities do open ourselves up for serious soul/butt kicking and yes, it's unpleasant but it is the nature of the online/internet beast.

I too get my feelings and pride hurt which is so maddening as it's done by people I don't even know nor ever will know. It's the reason I rarely participate in online forums -- this is my first one in years and years -- as a sensitive human being, I should know better than to open myself up to ridicule but as an open person, it's often very hard -- there is rarely a middle ground for me. I very rarely am at risk of hurting other's, it's me that will always be the injured party.

anyway, TayRivers... just wanted to make sure that you knew I was not personally attacking you or your opinions at all. Okay? I just wanted to say, take it if you can but be aware of what you're in for and i'm saying it all to myself as wel...

I'm just venting at my own devilish inadequacies of dealing with the online personal attack or the perceived threat of attack...

;)

Best,

LGG

I very rarely go to OT for the very reason that I do not wish to be involved in the behavour that goes on there. There are occations when something has been posted that is of an important topic as in the death of Ted Kennedy, I think it is very sad that this topic was used as a platform for the usual childish nonesense that goes on.

I know thare are others who would use the OT forum for normal discussions but wont because of the risk of their posts being turned into another avenue for the few who take great delight in derailing every post they can..

I have been around the internet long enough to know that people say and do things on forums that they would not otherwise do in the real world, I also know that there are very few moderated forum where the sort of behavour that goes on her on our OT would be tolerated.

I also agree about some of the regional forums not being welcoming to some people, some of us would like to have somewhere to talk to others where the same TOS rules apply as in the other forums and is not dedicated to just one area/country.

As for saying "well if you dont like it then dont go there" that is just giving a green light to those who choose to have "FUN" at others expence.

lgg....your n00bish ways are n00b-tacular!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I made this thread because I think a sticky post in OT would serve as a warning for people who may be offended or get upset at the way thing go on in OT, If you are forewarned then you know what you are letting yourself into. If there are no TOS in OT then it would be good to know that. If there are TOS then having it posted in a sticky would mean people whould know what they are, because clearly they are not the same as in the other forums.

I did not make the tread to complain about anyone person or the moderators or anyone else, Just as a sugestion for site ideas..

The mods give posters more wiggle room in the OT forum & that's a good thing. There are limits & posters who like to push them, but that's just part of the deal. If you're looking for information try another forum. I don't say that to be an #######, but it's just reality.

Well, the truth of the matter is... most of the country-specific forums alienate anyone that happens in to their domain as well - even my own country! A small group of people chit-chatting about non-immigration related topics that don't invite anyone else to participate unless you are one of the chosen few...

So, don't chastise OT for being that way when that is from whence you all came...

I don't see people being alienated in the Canada forum? Do I just not see that? I think everyone is included in discussions if they chose to jump in.

While there does exit some moderation in OT, it has been largely treated as an anything goes forum. The atmosphere is determined by the people who post there. Those who post the most have decided that the current environment is the one that they prefer. The only way this is going to change is if they decide to go somewhere else, but VJ is not going to push them away. Basically you have two options - find a friendlier site for off-topic discussions or stand your ground in OT and try to change the atmosphere. Good luck if you choose the second.

This is true. I like OT the way it is today, but there was a time when I did not. Many months and years of trolling by yours truly has contributed to turning it into what it is today. I still remember the days when OT was dominated by a bunch of women exchanging cat pictures
